• Car

  To reach Makalu Base Camp from Kathmandu, first drive to the district headquarters of Tumlingtar. The journey will take approximately 12-15 hours depending on road conditions. From Kathmandu, take the Araniko Highway, following the signs to Biratnagar, and then head to Tumlingtar. Be sure to arrange for a vehicle in advance, as public transportation options may be limited and can take longer. Costs for hiring a private car can range from NPR 15,000 to NPR 20,000.

• Public Bus

  From Kathmandu, you can catch a public bus to Tumlingtar. Buses leave from the Gongabu Bus Park and the journey may take around 15-20 hours. Make sure to buy your ticket in advance as these buses can fill up quickly. The cost for a ticket is usually around NPR 1,500 to NPR 2,500. Once you arrive in Tumlingtar, you can find local guides or porters to help you navigate the trekking route to Makalu Base Camp.

• Trek from Tumlingtar

  After reaching Tumlingtar, you will need to trek towards Makalu Base Camp. It is advisable to hire a local guide for this trek. The trek from Tumlingtar to Makalu Base Camp typically takes about 10-12 days, depending on your pace and the route taken. There are various stops along the way, including Khandbari, Num, and Sedua, where you can rest and acclimatize. • Helicopter Transfer

  For a quicker option, you can also book a helicopter flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar. This option is significantly more expensive, with costs ranging from NPR 30,000 to NPR 50,000 per person, depending on the season and demand. This method allows you to skip the lengthy drive and get straight to the trekking point. Helicopter rides typically take about 1.5 hours.
