Getting There

  • Car

    If you're driving from central Jersey Shore, head north on Route 35 toward Highlands. Merge onto the Garden State Parkway North via the ramp to New York. Continue on the Parkway and take Exit 117 toward Leonardo/Highlands. After exiting, follow signs for Route 36 East. Continue on Route 36 until you reach Hudson Road. Turn left onto Hudson Road, and you will find Gateway National Recreation Area at 26 Hudson Rd, Highlands, NJ 07732. There is no entrance fee for the park.

  • Public Transportation

    From the central Jersey Shore area, take NJ Transit train service on the North Jersey Coast Line toward New York Penn Station. Get off at the Highlands station. From there, you can either walk or take a taxi. The park is about a 15-20 minute walk from the station. Head west on Bay Avenue, then turn right onto Hudson Road. Gateway National Recreation Area will be on your left at 26 Hudson Rd. Make sure to check the NJ Transit schedule for train times.

  • Bicycle

    For those who prefer cycling, you can rent a bike in Jersey Shore. Follow Route 36 East towards Highlands. There are bike lanes available, and the ride is approximately 4 to 5 miles depending on your starting point. Once you reach Highlands, turn onto Hudson Road, and the Gateway National Recreation Area will be at 26 Hudson Rd. Always wear a helmet and follow traffic rules.
