    Car

    If you are driving from the town of Fossil, Oregon, head south on Highway 19 for approximately 18 miles. Then, merge onto Highway 26 and continue for about 12 miles. Look for the signs directing you to the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument - Painted Hills Unit. Turn onto Burnt Ranch Road and follow it directly to the Painted Hills parking area. Please note that there is no entrance fee for the Painted Hills.

    From the town of Mitchell, Oregon, take Highway 26 westbound. Drive for about 24 miles until you reach the junction with Burnt Ranch Road. Turn left onto Burnt Ranch Road and follow the signs to the Painted Hills. The route is scenic, with plenty of opportunities for photography along the way. There is no entrance fee required to access the Painted Hills.

    Public Transportation + Car

    If you are using public transportation, take a bus to the nearest town, which is Fossil. From Fossil, you will need to arrange for a car rental or use a rideshare service to reach Painted Hills.
