History of Marina East

From Shoreline to Reclaimed Land

Marina East is a product of Singapore’s post-independence programme of land reclamation and waterfront planning. The shallow coastal waters east of the historic harbour were progressively transformed into usable land, extending the city’s central area and creating the wider Marina Bay basin. This process replaced a natural edge with an engineered one, allowing planners to coordinate roads, drainage, public open space and future development as a single system. Marina East therefore has no long-established town centre or historic street grid; its identity begins with modern state-led urban expansion.

The Marina Bay Water System

The formation of Marina Bay connected several waterways into a managed freshwater reservoir system, reflecting Singapore’s need to secure water supplies while protecting low-lying urban districts from flooding. Marina Barrage, built across the mouth of the Marina Channel and opened in 2008, became the most visible piece of this infrastructure. Although the barrage sits at the edge of adjoining planning areas, its reservoir, promenades and engineering role help explain Marina East’s present landscape. Gardens on the New Waterfront

The development of Gardens by the Bay introduced a major public-garden project to the reclaimed Marina waterfront.
