Diskuskastaren is a bronze copy of an ancient Greek athlete—an image that recalls the original classical study of the discus-thrower and the era’s fascination with physical perfection. The sculpture represents the practised calm before motion: a compact, controlled pose suggesting concentration, strength and the geometric harmony prized in Greek aesthetics. Although the original sculptors lived in classical Athens, the bronze at Götaplatsen is a modern cast placed as part of a set of four antique-inspired figures in the early 20th century.

The statue was installed with three companion works on the museum steps in 1931, joining the stairway ensemble that frames the Gothenburg Museum of Art. These sculptures were created as works after ancient models and were brought here as part of a civic programme to enrich the square’s classical atmosphere. The cast now complements the museum’s neoclassical approach to façade and stair design, where living culture meets the visual language of antiquity.
