Sillfiske Legacy

In the late 1700s, Lilla Varholmen buzzed with activity as Plank o Schönfelt operated a major herring saltery here, producing 4,750 barrels of salted herring in 1791 alone. A large timber-frame building dominated the site, supported by several outbuildings and even a krog for weary workers. This island stood as a key player in Torslanda's booming herring industry, capturing the essence of Göteborg's coastal economy when fish transformed barren holmar into thriving hubs.

From Saltery to Villa Haven

By the early 1800s, the herring boom faded, leaving structures repurposed for new uses. In 1914, Sophus Petersen, a restaurateur from Lorensbergs, purchased the island and erected a villa encircled by an ornamental garden. He expanded with vast kitchen gardens for vegetables and fruit orchards, shielded by tall stone walls that still partially stand today, evoking a shift from industrial grit to genteel retreat.

Architectural Remnants

The core sillmagasin, rebuilt into housing in 1934, features 1-2 stories with an asymmetrical roof that lends unique character. Additional homes dotted the landscape, blending functionality with charm. These preserved elements make Lilla Varholmen the sole surviving saltery site in Torslanda, a tangible link to vanished maritime trades amid rocky shores and open waters.

Coastal Island Character

Nestled in Torslanda's western reaches, the island merges rugged granite outcrops with cultivated pockets. High stone murars frame former gardens, while paths wind through remnants of orchards and meadows. Its position near Öckerö offers sweeping sea views, where wind carries salt-tinged breezes and gulls cry over tidal rhythms, embodying Bohuslän's timeless archipelago allure.
