If you are starting from Petersburg's downtown area, head east on Sycamore Street toward S Market Street. Continue straight for about 0.5 miles until you reach the intersection with E Washington Street. Turn left onto E Washington Street and walk for about 0.3 miles. You will pass the historic Appomattox River and some local shops. As you continue, look for signs indicating the way to the Petersburg National Battlefield. After passing the intersection with S Crater Road, you will soon see a sign for the Pennsylvania Monument. The monument is located within the Petersburg National Battlefield park area, so make sure to enter through the park entrance where you can find the monument a short walk from the visitor center.

For those who prefer biking, start at the Petersburg Area Transit Center. From there, head southeast on E Washington Street. Follow the same route as walking, but you can take shortcuts through the park trails if available. After about 1.5 miles, you will reach the entrance to the Petersburg National Battlefield. Once inside, follow the signs to the Pennsylvania Monument. The biking trails within the park are scenic and provide a great view of the historic landscape.
