Whether you're an art aficionado, a history buff, a foodie, or an outdoor enthusiast, Aarhus has something to captivate your senses and leave you with lasting memories. Come explore this dynamic city where culture meets the coastline.
No visit to Aarhus is complete without experiencing ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, an architectural marvel and a cultural beacon. The museum's iconic 'Your Rainbow Panorama' installation by Olafur Eliasson is a must-see. Perched atop the building, this circular walkway of colored glass offers a unique perspective of the city, transforming the urban landscape into a vibrant spectrum of hues.
As you stroll through the panorama, the city's familiar landmarks take on new life, bathed in the warm glow of different colors. The experience is both disorienting and exhilarating, prompting you to see Aarhus in a whole new light. The museum itself is a work of art, its modern design seamlessly blending with the surrounding cityscape. Inside, you'll find a diverse collection of Danish and international art, spanning various periods and styles.
Currently, ARoS is hosting several exhibitions, including 'Picasso, Miró, Léger and the Many Voices of Modernism' which opened April 5, 2025, showcasing works from the LaM Museum by some of the greatest Western European modernists. Also showing is 'Alexander Tovborg – Divine Comedy', and 'Igshaan Adams – Weerhoud'. Looking ahead, ARoS is preparing for the completion of 'The Dome', a Skyspace by James Turrell, scheduled to open in late 2025. This ambitious project promises to be another immersive and thought-provoking experience, further solidifying ARoS's position as a leading art institution. In June 2025, ARoS will present 'Lost Property', a major new video installation by London-based artist Jenkin Van Zyl in the new subterranean gallery.
ARoS is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm and Saturday to Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Admission fees vary depending on the exhibitions, so it's best to check the museum's website for the most up-to-date information.
Local Tip: Visit ARoS on a clear day to fully appreciate the 'Your Rainbow Panorama' experience. The colors are most vibrant when the sun is shining.

Step into a living history book at Den Gamle By (The Old Town), an open-air museum that transports you through different eras of Danish town life. This meticulously recreated village showcases the evolution of Danish society from the 16th century to the 1970s, offering a fascinating glimpse into the past.
Wander through cobblestone streets lined with half-timbered houses, merchant's shops, and artisan workshops. Interact with costumed interpreters who bring history to life, demonstrating traditional crafts and sharing stories of bygone days. The museum is divided into different historical periods, each with its unique charm and character. Explore the 1864 town, with its quaint buildings and horse-drawn carriages; step into the 1927 neighborhood, complete with a radio shop and a dentist's office; or experience the 1974 exhibit, showcasing the rise of consumerism and modern living.
One of the highlights of Den Gamle By is the opportunity to witness traditional crafts in action. Watch a blacksmith forge iron, a baker prepare fresh bread, or a weaver create intricate textiles. These demonstrations provide a tangible connection to the past, allowing you to appreciate the skills and craftsmanship of previous generations.
In May 2025, Den Gamle By will host a variety of special events and exhibits. Check the museum's website for the most up-to-date information on daily activities and demonstrations. Den Gamle By is fully accessible, and dogs are allowed on a leash. Be sure to check out Castle Tour 2025 - Much Ado About Nothing - Den Gamle By Musikpavillon in June.
Hidden Gem: Descend into the underground exhibit 'Aarhus Fortæller,' which tells the story of Aarhus from the Viking age to the present day. This immersive exhibit uses artifacts, multimedia displays, and interactive elements to bring the city's history to life.

For a taste of Aarhus's modern culinary scene, head to Aarhus Street Food, located in the city's former bus garages near the Aarhus Central Station. This vibrant food market brings together a diverse array of vendors, offering a global culinary journey under one roof. From Mexican tacos to Vietnamese banh mi, from Argentinian steak to traditional Danish smørrebrød, there's something to satisfy every craving.
Aarhus Street Food is committed to sustainability, with many vendors using local and organic ingredients in their dishes. The market's focus on reducing waste and promoting environmentally friendly practices makes it a responsible choice for conscious consumers. With more than 30 different street food stalls and bars, Aarhus Street Food is a permanent street food market.
The atmosphere at Aarhus Street Food is lively and convivial, with communal tables and outdoor seating areas perfect for socializing and enjoying your meal. The market is open daily from 11:30 am to 9:00 pm, making it a great spot for lunch, dinner, or a late-night snack. Dogs are allowed, and outdoor seating is available.
Unique Food Stall: Don't miss the opportunity to try a Flæskestegssandwich (pork roast sandwich) from a local vendor. This classic Danish dish features crispy pork belly, pickled red cabbage, and remoulade sauce, all served on a freshly baked roll.

Embrace Aarhus's coastal location by exploring its beautiful beaches. Just a short distance from the city center, you'll find a variety of sandy shores perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the refreshing sea breeze. Ballehage Beach, located near Marselisborg Forest, is a popular choice for families and outdoor enthusiasts. This Blue Flag beach offers a range of facilities, including a jetty, toilets, and changing rooms. The clear waters and gentle waves make it ideal for swimming, and the surrounding forest provides ample opportunities for hiking and picnicking.
Den Permanente is another popular beach. Moesgård Beach is another option, offering a more secluded and natural setting. Here the forest extends all the way down to the beach.
When swimming in Aarhus's coastal waters, it's important to be aware of potential safety hazards. Check local advisories for information about water quality and potential jellyfish. Offshore winds will quickly carry inflatable beach toys, rubber boats and air mattresses out to sea, and there is an increased risk of stinging jellyfish. For the adventurous, winter bathing is a popular activity in Aarhus. Several beaches offer facilities for winter swimmers, including saunas and heated changing rooms.
Local Tip: Before taking a dip in the sea, check with local lifeguards or tourist information for updates on swimming conditions and any potential hazards.

Aarhus is a city that loves to celebrate, with a vibrant calendar of festivals and events throughout the year. In May 2025, the city will host several exciting events, including the SPOR Festival for contemporary music and sound art (May 14-18). This unique festival brings together musicians, composers, dancers, and visual artists to create thought-provoking and innovative performances.
Another event to look forward to is the Aarhus Huckster Market (May 29 - June 1). This traditional market features vendors selling a variety of goods, from antiques and crafts to food and beverages. The market is a great place to find unique souvenirs and experience the local culture.
If you're visiting Aarhus later in the year, be sure to check out annual events like Aarhus Pride in May, the NorthSide Festival in June, and Aarhus Festuge in late August/early September. These events offer a diverse range of entertainment, from music and theater to art and culture.
Local Tip: Check the VisitAarhus website for a complete list of events and festivals happening during your visit. Book tickets in advance, especially for popular events.
