Discover the rugged beauty of the Armenian Highlands this August, where clear skies and warm weather create the perfect backdrop for unforgettable trekking adventures.
Armenia, a land steeped in ancient history and dramatic landscapes, offers a unique trekking experience in its highlands. The clear skies and warm weather of August make it an ideal time to explore the diverse terrain, from the volcanic peaks of the Geghama Mountains to the historical trails of Syunik Province. This journey promises not only physical challenges but also a deep dive into Armenia's rich cultural heritage and natural wonders.
Syunik's Embrace: Where Legends are Etched in Stone
The Syunik Province, often called the heart of the Armenian Highlands, is a realm of dramatic landscapes and profound historical significance. This region is home to the Legends Trail, a 15-day hiking route that winds through rugged mountains and past ancient monasteries, following old Silk Road footpaths. Hikers can immerse themselves in the beauty and history of Syunik, starting from the town of Goris and ending in Kapan. Each section of the trail can also be enjoyed as a day hike.
The Legends Trail, a 150 km long trail, passes through more than 30 rural communities within the regions of Goris, Tatev and Kapan. The trail connects cultural, natural, and historical sites, many of which have ancient legends associated with them.
As you traverse the province, keep an eye out for the Great Hermitage of Tatev, dating back to the 17th century and perched on the cliffside of the Vorotan River. For a unique experience, take the Wings of Tatev cableway from Tatev to Halidzor village, recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s longest non-stop double track cable car.
Hidden Gem: Syunik is also known for its tradition of aging cheese in clay pots with local herbs. This culinary delight offers a taste of the region's unique flavors, blending ancient techniques with the natural bounty of the land.

Geghama's Giants: Scaling Volcanic Wonders
The Geghama Mountains, characterized by their volcanic cones, craters, and alpine lakes, present a starkly beautiful contrast to Syunik's verdant landscapes. Among these giants, Mount Azhdahak stands as the range's highest peak, offering a challenging yet rewarding climb. The lake-filled crater at its summit is a sight to behold, reflecting the vast sky and surrounding peaks.
The Geghama Mountains are known for their huge amount of petroglyphs and sculptures of mythological creatures, known as “vishaps” (dragons). Over 12,000 petroglyphs have been discovered in the Geghama mountain range. These petroglyphs depict hunting, fighting, dancing, and land cultivation.
These mountains are also home to ancient petroglyphs and 'Vishap stones,' remnants of cultures long past. The vishaps are stelae carved with animal imagery found in the high-altitude summer pastures of the Armenian Highland.
Practical Tip: Hikers should be prepared for varied weather conditions, as summer thunderstorms are common in the Geghama Mountains. Bringing appropriate gear ensures a safe and enjoyable trek through this volcanic wonderland.

Lastiver's Secrets: Caves Carved in Time
Venture into the lush Khachaghbyur River valley near Yenokavan village to discover the enigmatic Lastiver Caves and Waterfalls. The hike to the caves is an experience in itself, winding through verdant forests and alongside the clear, flowing river.
The Lastiver Caves served as refuges during Mongol invasions, offering shelter to locals. The carvings on the walls provide a glimpse into the lives of those who sought safety within these natural alcoves.
Local Legend: The name 'Lastiver' originates from a precarious ladder used to access the caves, a testament to the resourcefulness of the people who once sought refuge here. The ladder reminded the locals of a raft, hence the name Lastiver, which translates to “up the raft”.

Selim's Silk Road Stop: A Caravanserai's Tale
Perched on the Selim Pass, the Selim Caravanserai stands as a testament to Armenia's pivotal role on the Silk Road. Constructed in 1332 by Prince Orbelian Chesar, this caravanserai offered respite to weary travelers crossing the Selim (Sulema) mountains.
The caravanserai's architecture, built with basalt stone, features stalactite carvings and bas-reliefs of a winged animal and a bull. The structure is divided into a vaulted antechamber and a large hall with three sections, illuminated by openings in the ceiling. The caravanserai is a three-nave structure of basalt, to which a vestibule was later added.
Insider Tip: Travelers should bring warm clothes, as the wind atop Selim Pass can be biting even in summer. The pass is typically open from May to November, offering a window to explore this historical landmark.

The Armenian Highlands, with their blend of natural beauty and historical depth, offer a unique and rewarding trekking experience. From the legendary trails of Syunik to the volcanic heights of Geghama, and the ancient secrets of Lastiver to the Silk Road history of Selim, Armenia invites adventurers to discover its hidden treasures under the clear, warm skies of August.
As you plan your journey, remember that the true essence of the Armenian Highlands lies not just in its landscapes, but in the warmth and resilience of its people. Engage with local communities, savor traditional cuisine, and immerse yourself in the rich cultural tapestry that makes this destination truly unforgettable. Your adventure in the Armenian Highlands promises to be a transformative experience, leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime.
