Coastal Expeditions on Shem Creek

Once you check in at Coastal Expeditions, your guides will prepare your group for the adventure by fitting your gear and offering a brief safety and instruction on how to sea kayak. Once we're on the water, we'll take a minute to get our "sea legs" before we paddle down towards the historic portion of Shem Creek and Charleston Harbor. We will return to this point at the end of the tour.

Shem Creek Park

Historic Shem Creek is one of the most iconic spots in Charleston and is known for its shrimp boats, seafood restaurants and wildlife. Bottlenose dolphins frequent this creek and will often breach just feet away from your kayak. In the summers, manatees call Shem Creek home and loggerhead turtles will occasionally pop above the surface. As you pass by the shrimp boats and oyster-lined marshes, you see Charleston Harbor and the Holy City Skyline. The Netflix show Outer Banks films on Shem Creek and your guide can show you familiar places where Pogues hang out!

We had a great experience exploring Shem Creek!! It was my first time kayaking. Chase was very calm and so knowledgeable about the ecology and wild life. It was really beautiful.

Great experience! Wes and Logan were on top of everything! They situated us in the proper size kayak and Wes gave great paddling instructions. We would have loved to have seen more dolphins, (there was one dolphin surfacing about in the bay area before headed out) but alas we were not to be so fortunate to see more. We experienced other wild life. Jelly fish, Blue Heron, Snowy Egret, Pelicans, Mallards, Cormorants, and a Mullet fish jumping out of the water! Wes and Logan were very knowledgable and enthusiastic about sharing there love of the environment. Two hours was just enough for us. We would highly recommend this tour.

Nathanael (sorry if that's spelled wrong!) did a great tour for me and my husband - it was a group tour but we lucked out and it was just the three of us. It was so nice to do something physically active in nature on our getaway to Charleston. Our guide was super knowledgeable about all of the ecosystems and wildlife in Shem Creek. He was very friendly and helpful in getting us set up with all of the logistics so we could get on the water quickly. Highly recommended! If it's helpful for logistics purposes: we took a quick Uber from out hotel in downtown Charleston and got to Shem Creek in under 20 min. For lunch right before, we ate at a great little restaurant right next door to Coastal Expeditions called Shem Creek Crab House. After our kayak trip, we walked down the street to Tavern and Table for a quick drink overlooking Shem Creek. It was a lovely afternoon!
