Numa região montanhosa de formas suaves e arredondadas, a Paisagem Protegida do Bico, com 2.070,83 ha, culmina nos 883 m, caracterizando-se, sobretudo nas áreas de maior altitude, pela presença de conjuntos de blocos arredondados de granito, dispostos isoladamente ou sobrepostos que conferem um aspeto caótico à paisagem.
As encostas, retalhadas por campos agrícolas, muros e socalcos, acolhem uma importante mancha de carvalhal, fruto das arborizações efetuadas no século XX pelos então Serviços Florestais. Na vegetação, de notar ainda a presença de bosques ripícolas, i.e. da margem dos cursos de água, dominados por freixo-de-folha-estreita (Fraxinus angustifolia) e amieiro (Alnus glutinosa), manchas de pinhal, lameiros e uma turfeira, ecossistema onde o nível de água se encontra à superfície, fomentando a vegetação hidrófila (i. e. adaptada ao encharcamento) e a formação de turfa, que se desenvolve na ausência de oxigénio.
Estão inventariadas 439 espécies da flora, incluindo alguns endemismos, como Bruchia vogesiaca um musgo e Veronica micrantha uma verónica. A fauna é variada, desde mamíferos, como o lobo-ibérico, a um numeroso cortejo de aves.
A ocupação humana é remota, sendo atestada pela existência de monumentos megalíticos (em Bico e São Martinho de Vascões), associados no núcleo megalítico de Chã de Lamas, povoados fortificados (castros de Cossourado e de Cristelo) e miliários romanos (i.e. marcos indicadores da milha romana).
