The site, originally a marshy burial ground, was first developed in the 7th century BC, growing over time to become the social, political and commercial hub of the Roman empire. Signature sights include the Arch of Septimius Severus, the Curia, the Temple of Saturn and the Arch of Titus.

Located 40 meters above the Roman Forum, the Palatine Hill is the most central of seven hills of Rome.
