Valdštejn is the oldest castle in the Bohemian Paradise. Due to its picturesque location in the sandstone rocks, it also became the second oldest accessible monument in Bohemia. The complex castle complex of Valdštejna Castle was built on jagged rocks for centuries. Hrubá Skála Castle, originally called Skála Castle, was built in the 14th century on massive sandstone rocks. The name Hrubá Skála arose to distinguish it from Little Rock. The castle with the surrounding manor was acquired from the last members of the dying Smiřicky family by Albrecht of Valdštejn, who annexed it to his Frydlant duchy. After many fires, the originally Gothic castle was rebuilt into a neo-Gothic romantic castle. Currently, the castle serves as a hotel and congress center. The observation tower, selected castle interiors and the castle courtyard are accessible to visitors. The castle offers a nice view of the surrounding countryside, especially Hruboskalsko, Trosky Castle, Tábor and Kozákov hills. The parking lot is located in front of the castle itself, so it is not allowed to drive in the courtyard of the castle.
