Guided Day Tour of the Isle of Lewis

We did the private tour of the Isle of Lewis with Hugh, and it was amazing! We just in port at Stornoway for a day, on a cruise. Our stop at the Isle of Lewis and Harris is the main reason we selected this ship/itinerary, I've been dreaming of seeing the beaches there for years. So the expectations were high.... Leading up to our day, Hugh was great to communicate with. He was able to customize the tour so that we got to see and do what we wanted to, but he was also able to exceed expectations with so many sights and stories we never could have dreamed of! He picked us up right on time, we swung by a grocery store to get some lunch and snacks (in case there was no place to stop) and away we went, heading right to the West Coast for lots of beach views. It was very windy and cold, but Hugh had no issue trudging along with us to the beaches, kilt and all. His vehicle was super clean and comfy/warm, so we thawed out in between stops. We took some beautiful roads, saw lots of sheep and waterfalls, beautiful harbors dotted with fishing boats... We were never rushed at our stops, as I was waiting for a peek of sunshine to get the perfect photos. We got to visit the Calanais Standing Stones (breathtaking), Doune Broch, Whale Bone Arch, Arnol Blackhouse, and Lews Castle/Museum where we saw the charming "Lewis Chess Men". Such an amazing and memorable day, all made possible by Hugh and his wonderful stories and sense of humor. I feel we made a friend, and hope to get back to the Isle of Lewis for a longer multi-night visit soon, when we will certainly engage Hugh again to show us even more wonderful places on the Isle of Lewis and Harris. I can't say enough, and highly recommend, Hugh and Hebridean Isle Tours!!

Hugh was great - like his kilt!! Always kept us entertained with cool mini stories throughout the entire tour and it was a really great day. I felt safe all the time whilst driving around in the van and he took us to some really eye-opening places! Fully recommended!!

An amazing day!! We booked our tour with Hugh and received quick and clear communication with details on itinerary, payment, meeting place, etc. Hugh even sent a photo of his vehicle so we could find him easily on the pier. Hugh is a wonderful and lively guide, with great stories, depth of knowledge and love for his country that just shines through. The spots visited were breathtaking, particularly the Lighthouse, and Hugh gave us plenty of time in each location to explore, take photos and ask questions. Heard from the group in the second van, Gordon, was friendly and informative and they all loved his stories.

Hugh was the most amazing & authentic guide, always allowing us enough time & flexible to adjust to our interests and schedule. Knowledgable and entertaining. Thank you Hugh.

I cannot say enough good things about Hebridean Isle Tours! I had never visited the Isles of Lewis or Harris before and stumbled upon the Hebridean Isle Tours website. I read the description of each of the three tours offered. They all sounded so interesting that I booked all three! And I am so glad I did! Each of the tours is packed full of beautiful sights: sandy beaches, historic monuments dating back hundreds and even thousands of years, and breath taking views of rolling craggy hills covered in heather. Each tour is packed with so many unique and valuable experiences, I feel very fortunate that I was able to participate in all three and take in all that Lewis and Harris have to offer. Hugh was exceptionally accommodating throughout all three tours, picking me up each day from my hotel and dropping me off at locations of my choosing in Stornoway. He is extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of island life and history, and is a genuinely kind soul! In addition, Hugh was able to provide great recommendations regarding restaurants, a car hire agency, and other activities to explore after the tours. Each of the other activities I did at Hugh’s recommendation were also wonderful experiences that I would not have known about otherwise. These tours were truly the highlight of my trip and this small family business is truly an asset to the islands! If you have the time and availability to participate in more than one tour, I highly recommend it! Five stars aren’t nearly enough!
