Your Itinerary

Los Angeles River

The LA River is more than a place to film a car chase for Grease of Terminator 2. This river has its own fascinating (and sometimes terrifying history.) This tour will take you through the LA River past, present, and future to help you better understand this vital waterway. The river is also a great place for bike riding, grabbing a bite to eat, or doing some bird watching. You'll know the best places for each by the end of the tour.

Lewis MacAdams Riverfront Park (formerly Marsh Park)

At our meeting point, we will learn about the people that have battled to make the river accessible. What started with pair of wire cutters and a rock n roll mindset, eventually morphed into the Friends of the LA River Organization. It wasn't always possible to walk or bike along the river like we can today. The river is undergoing a transformation and the Friends of the LA River Organization have had a vital role in the recent development.

Echo Park

This is where the hike really takes off. Up into the hills you'll go, using secret stairs and forgotten paths. There's beautiful early 1900s architecture and views of LA landmarks like the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory. Echo Park is one of LA's older neighborhoods and the hills provided seclusion for occult organizations and self-sustaining religious compounds. The stairs, hills, and trails all lead to a secret swing with a great view of the LA River and LA's Eastside.

Elysian Valley

The final stretch takes us back by the LA River. In this last section, you'll see where new restaurants, shops, spas, apartments, and pocket parks are popping up along the river. Los Angeles has massive plans for the future of the LA River. What we see now reflects the beginning of a $1.6 billion plan to revitalize and renaturalize the LA River. Who knows what the LA River will look like 100 years from now? It could be as alien to us as our river would be the Indigenous people of LA 500 years ago.

Spoke

One of LA's best spots for breakfast or lunch. This is a great spot to go before or after the tour. You can also rent a bike here and spend some more time by the LA River.

What a great tour. These were sights you would never see on a traditional tour. Chris was so knowledgeable. You can tell he has done tons of research including talking with the people in the neighborhoods we visited. He was very helpful with the LA experience and offered several suggestions for future visits.

Chris was very knowledgeable and very animated in his descriptions of both the LA river as well as the secret staircases through the neighborhoods. We love hiking and greatly enjoyed it!! We saw a part of LA that we would have never seen with driving on the expressway. I would highly recommend it!

Chris is just the best guide ever! He led us on the LA River and secret stair hike and we had a blast! Get ready to walk up some steep roads, learn some interesting info about LA history, and get some great panoramic views! There were a few times where we were saying "wow are we really in LA right now?" I forgot to take pictures except for this one. Anyway - thank you Chris - maybe we could do it again some time! We took the sunset blvd tour with him too, so maybe we'll just try to see them all!

I went on this tour a few months ago and was blown away. I didn't know neighborhoods like this existed in LA! Chris was a great tour guide and I can't imagine any other tours providing the experience he did. Anyone looking for a one-of-a-kind trip through LA should take this tour.

Absolutely amazing! Chris is the best tour guide, knows everything about LA and knows how to tell it in an entertaining way. Very nice walk with a few stairs off the usual touristic path. I totally recommend it!

Chris has crafted a truly unique tour full of beautiful views and interesting stories and executes it seamlessly. He is a talented guide, with the perfect combo of great knowledge and personality. His curiosity is contagious!

Chris loves the city, its history and its people. This was a very engaging walk, with the enjoyable bonus of Chris chatting with neighborhood residents about who is the local historian he could contact for more information. There is a lot of walking up and down hils and stairs so be aware of that and bring water and a hat if it is warm. Highly recommend.

Chris' walking tour of the LA River, Silver Lake and Echo Park was fascinating and fun. His knowledge about LA is deep and wide, and he shares it in a way that's engaging and relatable. He researches and puts together unique tours because he's truly interested in the histories and stories of the places around him. Chris' LA, Silver Lake and Echo Park tour started on the banks of the LA River, where he shared the significance of the river, both to the city's initial formation and to the area's current ecology. We then wound our way through Frogtown, Silver Lake and Echo Park, trading city roads for hidden staircases and neighborhood trails as we learned the history of these lovely, interesting and artistic neighborhoods. I highly recommend joining Chris (and his adorable dog Odin) for this very special experience.

I live in the area adjacent to the LA River and Echo Park and I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful journey through charming streets and hidden stairways that I was totally unaware of. Chris knows the history of LA and it’s neighborhoods inside and out and he shares wonderful stories with expertise, humor, and charm…if you’re looking for an “off-the-beaten-track” experience in LA , you couldn’t do better than this.
