What to expect
At 25 km north of Bucharest we visit Snagov Monastery, located on an island with the same name. The orthodox monastery was built on the same place where Vlad the Impaler had a prison. The church we see today was built in the XVI century by Neagoe Basarab, the original painting is only in the narthex. The rest of the church was repainted in 1815. This monastery is famous because here we have the tomb of Dracula.
Mogosoaia Palace
Mogosoaia Palace is a beautiful residence next to a lake. The history of this place begins in 1680 when Constantin Brancoveanu, a rich aristocrat bought a large property here for his son Stefan. The palace was completed in 1702. At that time, Brancoveanu was the ruler of Wallachia. After 1714 when the Wallachian prince was executed together with his four sons, the palace was devastated by ottomans. Through some matrimonial alliances, the palace became the property of Bibescu, a rich noble family. During Martha Bibescu’s time, the palace was renovated and transformed into one of the trendiest noble residences from Eastern Europe.
Targoviste was the capital of Wallachia before Bucharest. Chindia Tower is the symbol of the city. It was built by Vlad the Impaler as the keep of fortifications. But it was renovated in 1847 by Gheorghe Bibescu, prince of Wallachia, and today we cand see a new tower, then the one from Dracula’s time.
