Hana Highway - Road to Hana

The Beautiful and Amazing Road to Hana. The Road to Hana is the crown-jewel of Hawaii driving tours. Lush rainforest, dramatic and rugged ocean vistas, countless waterfalls and pools. General Geographic Area: Road to Hana Maui General Geographic Area: Road to Hana Maui In a nutshell: The Road to Hana is the crown-jewel of Hawaii driving tours. Lush rainforest, dramatic and rugged ocean vistas, countless waterfalls and pools. Minuses: If you get car-sick, there are going to be 600 opportunities to review your breakfast. Sound-bite: “600 turns?!? More like one 50-mile-long turn…”

Bamboo Forest

Hike into a beautiful, pristine Bamboo Forest to swim in a pool at the base of natural waterfall. There are few, if any companies on Maui that provide a tour of this unique location. All guests should be in good physical shape and be able to hike at least one mile on both flat and inclined surfaces. There are streams to cross and rocks to hop. You will have to be agile enough to do some minor rock hopping, dunk and climb over fallen trees that may be in the path. We typically spend about an hour at this location. But we also make the tour up as we go along according to the group, weather and trail conditions. You may get muddy and wet traversing the trail. There may be mosquitos so please bring your own bug spray if you think you may need it. This hike is not difficult, but it is not a simple stroll through the woods on a path that was manmade. This truly is an adventure!

Ke‘anae Point

This is one of the most scenic places on the entire Road to Hana. It is also where our tour ends and we begin our drive back to where we started our tour in Paia. The Ke’anae Peninsula is a dramatic half-mile long massive finger of newer lava sticking out from the cliff line of the Hana Highway. Historically, Ke’anae has been a taro producing Hawaiian village, and much of the land is in taro lo’i today. It is told that the dirt was brought down here basket-by-basket. This story may very well be true since the area is young lava rock, created quite recently (geologically speaking) in a massive flow from Haleakala. On April 1, 1946 the area was almost completely destroyed by a tsunami generated by an 8.6 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Alaska. This village has deep Hawaiian Roots. There are public restrooms at this location.

Ho'okipa Beach Park

Ho’okipa Beach is a world-renowned windsurfing destination with often dramatic and impressive surf for sightseers as well. Here you will be able to view and pictures of Hawaiian Sea Turtles basking in the sun, and sometimes a resident Monk Seal. There is optional swimming at this location, showers and public restrooms. Ho’okipa is Mecca to the windsurfing world (and no slouch for board surfing, either.) There are professional windsurfing competitions held here, and on just about any day with wind (most) you can watch pros doing their thing. Ho’okipa also provides sightseers a stunning backdrop to watch the best effortlessly play with the ocean in a way that mere mortals can only dream of.

Aunty Sandy's Banana Bread

Here you will be treated to delicious, fresh baked Banana Bread. In 1983, Aunty Sandy Hueu began to bake her famous banana bread in Keʻanae, Maui. In 2003, her daughter Tammy joined the business to create an authentic family owned and operated food stand on the Keʻanae peninsula. Since then, Aunty Sandy’s has become a must stop destination for hot, fresh baked banana bread. Aunty Sandyʻs has been featured in numerous magazines and publications and most recently on Gordon Ramseyʻs “Unchartered” television series on the National Geographic channel.

The tour guide did not show and could not be contacted. Ruined our day with 2 young kids who were really disappointed along with the adults. Waiting for a complete refund.

The guide never showed up!! We got there at 8am for our 8:30am tour and waited till 10:00am! We tried calling 100 times no answer and voicemail was full!! Left tons of texts and even messages on his social media and tried calling via social media no answer ever! We paid thousands of dollars to come to Maui for two nights for that specific tour and never got to go!! Most unprofessional disrespectful thing I’ve ever experienced!! Another family showed up at 9 AM booked the exact same tour with the same guide, which would be impossible if we were leaving at 8:30AM and them at nine and he never showed up for them either. No phone call no response! Ruined our day!!

While our tour guide was very nice and knowledgeable, we didn't receive the tour described. The company had a cyber attack and we were very accommodating and switched our tour day and time to give them time to get some things figured out. In hind sight we should have just cancelled, however the reviews and photos were so great that I did not want to miss out on this amazing trip that we had been looking forward to for months. I picked this tour because the reviews were so great. We never hiked in the bamboo forest that was supposed to be a unique location for this tour. We didn't do the Waikamoi Ridge Trail. We went to a waterfall but not the one described in the tour listing. Since we switched our time to later in the day, we missed out on Auntie Sandy's fresh banana bread. We had no cell service while on the tour, so I had no listing to reference during the tour to point these things out. Like I said, our tour guide was nice and provided great information, it wasn't his fault because he was thrown onto the tour at the last minute. This was an expensive, once in a lifetime tour for us and unfortunately turned out to be a disappointment.

Billy was a true character. He has plenty of stories and facts to keep you entertained. He is funny, good driver, laid back and feels like a friend right away. He makes the tour catered to each group. We happened to be on our honeymoon and were booked on the tour all by ourselves which was pretty cool! He takes you to spots that are not overcrowded with tourists. We swam with turtles only 1 other couple on the beach, went to a waterfall and were the only people there -that is the type of tour this is. We had the best time, definitely a highlight of our 2 week honeymoon in Hawaii! We will be back!!

This was a really fun experience! It is a little costly, but Charlotte delivered for sure!! She made stops and showed us a bunch of things off the path and took us to some of the local spots that the tourists don’t always know about. It was just my husband and I, so we really got spoiled! My husband would normally do the driving and it was nice that he didn’t have to and he could see all the things as well. We did this early on in our trip and I’m glad we did because Charlotte gave us the run down on all things Maui and the best beaches and places to check out! We even got to stop and see some sea turtles and a Monk Seal! Would totally do this again!! I definitely recommend it!!

Billy and Eugene were great tour guides- very knowledgeable and took us on some secluded, beautiful places. The tour is small so we got the chance to stay as long as we wanted! I would highly recommend this tour company!

Heather_M

The only deterrent was the price. The guide Billy was very informative. I was more comfortable with him driving than I would have been if we drove it.

Autumn_F

Billy was great! He was laid back and funny, and even took photos of us which we loved. We really enjoyed our time with him.

We are still riding high from our tour with Billy! We booked the small group half-day tour, but it ended up being a private tour (not guaranteed, surely) at a much better rate than you’ll get anywhere else. Billy fully customized our tour, mixing adventure with knowledge of the area geology, biology, culture & history. He also had some really fun stories of Maui celebrities & locals to share along the way. Billy let’s you set the pace, makes sure you have snacks & drinks, brings towels & hand sanitizer and covers everything from rainbow trees, to cliff jumping, to banana bread and tries… if that what you want. He sends you on your way with photos and videos from your day & great recs for how to spend the rest of your time on Maui. We’ll be back & sending our friends his way!

John and Charlotte were great guides, showing us places off the beaten path and sharing stories and information not everyone knows. Terrific tour! Only 4 of us. Perfect Road to Hana small group tour!
