Hana Highway - Road to Hana

The Beautiful and Amazing Road to Hana. The Road to Hana is the crown-jewel of Hawaii driving tours. Lush rainforest, dramatic and rugged ocean vistas, countless waterfalls and pools. General Geographic Area: Road to Hana Maui General Geographic Area: Road to Hana Maui In a nutshell: The Road to Hana is the crown-jewel of Hawaii driving tours. Lush rainforest, dramatic and rugged ocean vistas, countless waterfalls and pools. Minuses: If you get car-sick, there are going to be 600 opportunities to review your breakfast. Sound-bite: “600 turns?!? More like one 50-mile-long turn…”

Bamboo Forest

Hike into a beautiful, pristine Bamboo Forest to swim in a pool at the base of natural waterfall. There are few, if any companies on Maui that provide a tour of this unique location. All guests should be in good physical shape and be able to hike at least one mile on both flat and inclined surfaces. There are streams to cross and rocks to hop. You will have to be agile enough to do some minor rock hopping, dunk and climb over fallen trees that may be in the path. We typically spend about an hour at this location. But we also make the tour up as we go along according to the group, weather and trail conditions. You may get muddy and wet traversing the trail. There may be mosquitos so please bring your own bug spray if you think you may need it. This hike is not difficult, but it is not a simple stroll through the woods on a path that was manmade. This truly is an adventure!

Ke‘anae Point

This is one of the most scenic places on the entire Road to Hana. It is also where our tour ends and we begin our drive back to where we started our tour in Paia. The Ke’anae Peninsula is a dramatic half-mile long massive finger of newer lava sticking out from the cliff line of the Hana Highway. Historically, Ke’anae has been a taro producing Hawaiian village, and much of the land is in taro lo’i today. It is told that the dirt was brought down here basket-by-basket. This story may very well be true since the area is young lava rock, created quite recently (geologically speaking) in a massive flow from Haleakala. On April 1, 1946 the area was almost completely destroyed by a tsunami generated by an 8.6 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Alaska. This village has deep Hawaiian Roots. There are public restrooms at this location.

Ho'okipa Beach Park

Ho’okipa Beach is a world-renowned windsurfing destination with often dramatic and impressive surf for sightseers as well. Here you will be able to view and pictures of Hawaiian Sea Turtles basking in the sun, and sometimes a resident Monk Seal. There is optional swimming at this location, showers and public restrooms. Ho’okipa is Mecca to the windsurfing world (and no slouch for board surfing, either.) There are professional windsurfing competitions held here, and on just about any day with wind (most) you can watch pros doing their thing. Ho’okipa also provides sightseers a stunning backdrop to watch the best effortlessly play with the ocean in a way that mere mortals can only dream of.

Aunty Sandy's Banana Bread

Here you will be treated to delicious, fresh baked Banana Bread. In 1983, Aunty Sandy Hueu began to bake her famous banana bread in Keʻanae, Maui. In 2003, her daughter Tammy joined the business to create an authentic family owned and operated food stand on the Keʻanae peninsula. Since then, Aunty Sandy’s has become a must stop destination for hot, fresh baked banana bread. Aunty Sandyʻs has been featured in numerous magazines and publications and most recently on Gordon Ramseyʻs “Unchartered” television series on the National Geographic channel.
