    We had high hopes for the Carrara quarry private tour. We live part time in Florence and have frequented many towns in the toscana region. We loved our visit to the quarries last summer and thought it would be a good idea to take our visiting family. We arrived at the pick up location before the appointed time, only to find out our tour guide was 30 minutes late. He waved us on the 4x4, banged the door behind us, and drove up the mountain. He never introduced himself, but was very knowledgeable about marble and the surrounding quarries. We made three small stops where he walked us through the process of mining, but when we asked questions, he was incredibly rude and condescending. He was very sexist as well. I asked what kind of marble was excavated - calacutta? Paonazzo? And he gave the rudest response and said the commercial names mean nothing and that I was stupid to ask. He said I was like his wife who wants designer handbags when all handbags carry the same amount of content (??!!). The rest of the trip was like that - we were walking on eggshells because he was so rude and condescending. It’s evident he hates both his job and tourists. We also never got the Lardo tasting part of the tour, but at that point we had enough of his sour and bitter attitude and couldn’t wait to be rid of him. It was an awful experience.

    The marble quarries were more impressive than we even thought they’d be! The caves were incredible! The views to die for! Our guide, however was a condescending, grumpy old man. We were afraid to even ask questions for fear of being berated by this unhappy human!

    Heike, our tour guide, was fabulous! She was full of wonderful insights and information about the industry and processes . We really were not prepared for such a great experience. Plus, the ride up to the mine was thrilling ( not for height averse people). Do not miss this!

    The tour and the tour guide were excellent. However, the start point is hard to find; GPS was not able to find it, so we had to call for directions. Once we arrived, it was great.
