Miramare Castle
Once arrived in Piazza Unità d'Italia, you'll reach the Castle of Miramare by private car/minivan. The castle towers over the Gulf of Trieste, located just at a few kilometers from the city. The castle was built by viennese architect Carl Junker between 1856 and 1860 for Archduke Maximillian of Habsburg, the brother of emperor Franz Joseph. He wished a residence on the sea worthy of the status of his beloved wife Charlotte, princess of Belgium. Walking through the halls, one can feel the atmosphere of the private chambers of the young couple who lived there. Through the windows, you'll get marvelous glimpses of the gulf. The castle is surrounded by a large gorgeous park measuring 54 acres. Maximilian himself wished this park to be built and he worked on it as well, personally selecting a moltitude of plants from his journeys around the world. The sea section around the castle is recognised as WWF Marine Natural Reserve for the protection of plant and animal life. At the end of the visit, the car/minivan will wait for you and take you back to the city centre.
