Hawaii Forest and Trail

This is the Big Island's most “in-depth” volcano experience. Join our National Park Certified Guides on a full-day adventure that will take you on a journey of our dramatic volcano activity from past to present. The day begins with a scenic drive over the stark and beautiful Saddle Road. Make a quick stop at the Maunakea Recreation Area for snacks, bathroom, stretch and to set the stage for the day as you overlook mesmerizing views of Maunakea and Maunaloa. From there we head straight to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. This park has been closed to the public from May 2018 to September 2018 due to recent volcanic activity. The park has now reopened with newly formed hardened lava and changed landscape. Your guide will prepare you for the day's hike with a bite to eat, hiking gear, and background information on the 2-3 mile hike. Given the ever-changing environment of this active volcano, our guides will select the route that best suites the group's interests & abilities. See the transformative stages of Kilauea and the power of Pele on the most unique and fulfilling volcano experience. Enjoy lunch after a nice hike in a scenic area of the park. The next stop is a treat -- enjoyed only by Hawaii Forest and Trail guests! Your guide will take you traversing into the gorgeous Kauhi Cavern. This exclusive access into this private lava tube is known for its rare yellow and gold microbial mats living on and accenting the cave walls. This cave has many unique features including its expansive rooms, 35 foot ceilings, bright golden walls and an “upside down” forest of roots hanging from the cave ceiling. Explore this underground world of volcanic history as your guide paints a picture of volcano past and present. Finally, enjoy an afternoon "pau hana" (end of day ritual) that includes appetizers sourced with local products grown from the very farm that surround this spectacular cave. Tracy with Hawaii Forest & Trail is an expert in the knowledge of the volcanos, trees, birds, and all wildlife on the Big Island. Her stories will amaze you! She will keep you entertained throughout the entire tour. The lava tunnel was the best that I have ever seen. I highly recommend the Volcano Unveiled Tour and Hawaii Forest & Trail for all your outdoor activities! They are a 5-star company!

This was our first time on the Big Island. The Forest and Trail tour was the highlight of our stay! At first we thought it was a bit pricey, but it was worth every dollar! It was a long day, from 8am to 8pm, and a lot of riding. Our tour guide Adam was amazing! He was very informative about the history of the island, the flora and fauna, and the volcanos. He took us to some places that we would have never found on our own and kept us well fed with multiple snacks, beverages, and meals. Would definitely recommend this all day adventure of a lifetime! Next time we will sign up for the star gazing. Thank you Hawai'i Forest and Trail. And a special thank you to Adam!!

This was the 2nd tour we did thru Hawaii Forest and Trail because they do such a great job. Our guide, Tracy, was extremely knowledgeable and shared many interesting facts and tidbits throughout the day. We saw and did many things that we wouldn’t have on our own, the most impressive being the lava tube! For me, this alone is worth the price of admission.

Our guide Tracy was excellent. She worked really hard and her knowledge was very extensive. We learned about geology, plants, Polynesian culture, local customs and history. The lava tube was incredible. Tracy was very personable and funny at times. She answered many questions that we all had. I would highly recommend this tour.

This was a fabulous tour. We met at their office which was a short drive from our hotel. Our tour guide was very friendly and efficient. She was very knowledgeable about the entire island and answered all our questions. We made a few stops along the way to the national park and so we were able to get an overview tour of this beautiful island. We did a few short hikes in the park and stopped into the visitor centre where we had a wonderful view of the crater at night. Since we don't like driving in the dark this was a perfect tour for us. It was a full day with a stop for a light dinner, which was provided and was totally delicious and filled us up! Would highly recommend this tour!

We absolutely loved this tour experience. Our tour guide Tracy was fantastic and provided insights and learnings all along the way. The lava tube that this tour has as a “special experience” was truly remarkable and breathtaking inside. The care the tour company provided through Tracy with snacks, lunch, and a lite dinner excellent. At the volcano site we felt like we were on another planet. Really impressed and one of the best and most insightful tours we have been on. Well Done!

Guava Jon was the best guide - super passionate and knowledgable. Saw and learned so much about the Big Island and its history and volcanoes.

A very long day but worth every minute. Our guide (Tracy) knew absolutely everything and enjoyed sharing info & stories. Seeing calderas, craters, lava tube and learning about the big island's different climates, plants and animals was great.

Mattheo was an engaging and knowledgable guide. PROS: Lava tube was unique and entertaining to explore. Volcano Park tour was interesting, including: caldera, crater and lava fields. Dinner was a little salty, but tasty. CONS: Bus ride was very very long. We watched several of your videos before booking this tour and expected a 2-3-mile hike would be part of the day, perhaps of the crater. It felt like all we did was sit on a bus for 12 hours. Value for this experience was over-priced and we would not recommend this trip to others staying in Kona. It is noteworthy that the current Canada-US exchange rate inflates the cost by almost 1.5x. Lunch was not very good. Sandwiches were 80% bun and 20% poor-quality content.
