    Directed to the 6th floor restaurant first. Museum on the 3rd floor. Impersonal approach by the staff at the various doors and was left with a sense of confusion on entering the various darkened rooms as to what the screen content was showing. The theme turned out to be about slavery and apartheid and the art was crude. Felt we had been deceived at the entrance about what we were paying to see and robbed of a lot of money. Will not recommend to others.

    As an architect I was delighted to see a truly jaw-dropping repurposing of an industrial building, in a broad sense. But many things let it down badly: - poor quality / gimmicky art and not nearly enough of it -exorbitant entry price -truly bizarre doorways into galleries, which look like service doors, no signs or ceremony / transitions -toilets gust off galleries with no signage at all, just blind blank doors! -breathtakingly poor signage / wayfinding -bewilderingly bad lighting in galleries On balance it seems like a brilliant architectureal flourish done by a master, but then handed on to be completed by uni students who had no idea what they were doing. It exists as a piece of architecture but fails miserably as a gallery.

    I agree with the other reviews on the art exhibits here but am still glad I went. Politics and history were focused in the exhibits. The building itself is an old silo which features a huge atrium hollowed out in the shape of a grain mill.

    The space alone is worth visiting. It's beyond stunning. Coolest thing I've ever seen @ a museum- they offer a # of prints on thin paper for guests to be able to take with them as they leave. What a cool idea that other museums should try!! The staff was super friendly and helpful at the museum as there are many twists and turns and some very dark/nearly pitch black spaces to navigate. The installations were a mix- some were provocative and some seemed like school projects. Overall a neat place to visit for an hour in concert with walking around the nearby Watershed- makes a perfect pairing. The only inhibitive dimension is th aggressively high price. It's too expensive for international guests for many visitors and a bit high for what you get thru engaging with the exhibitions.

    Although I spent 3.5hrs at the museum, I only had time to thoroughly experience the exhibits on floors 6 & 4 as they were so dense - and, quite frankly, rather overwhelming! Whilst I learnt a great deal about the freedom struggles of different peoples in the world, including but not exclusively South Africa, I learnt very little about contemporary ( non - political) African art. This was hugely disappointing. It would be extremely helpful if, in the entrance hall, there could be information given about the contents of the exhibits on each floor to help the visitor plan his/her time in the museum. The building itself is undeniably impressive, both from the inside and the outside.

    Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) is a public, not-for-profit institution that exhibits, collects, preserves and researches contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora; conceives and hosts international exhibitions; develops supporting educational, discursive and enrichment progammes; encourages intercultural understanding; and strives for access for all. The museum’s galleries feature rotating, temporary exhibitions with a dedicated space for the permanent collection. The institution also includes the Centre for Art Education, the Centre for the Moving Image, and a project space for emerging artists.
