First off – it was a wonderful Christmas holiday with brilliant sunshine and starry skies – which is why we found the Hotel Astoria's fourth star in the sky. The location is perfect, as is the double room for single occupancy on the 5th floor with a balcony and sea view. Parking is limited; hotel parking spaces are available but very tight, and a hefty €15.00 per day is charged, though the price is negotiable down to €10.00 – probably for longer stays – we were there for 7 days. The challenge at the hotel is finding staff – whether at reception or in the restaurant – you need patience. However, once you find them, they are very friendly, and any issues in the room (like being cold or a dripping showerhead) are quickly resolved; except for the bathroom heating, which apparently never works. The breakfast buffet is excellent – the coffee quality improved significantly over the course of the week. If you're looking for variety at dinner, then the Astoria isn't the right hotel. The quality of the food is good, but the selection is rather monotonous. ... If you want to have an aperitif or digestif at the hotel bar, you have to search for a waiter again, who is indeed very friendly, but the bar closes at 9 pm (at least during the Christmas season). The last challenge of the day is getting a working room key – we stayed at the hotel for seven days, and from the second day onward, the room key didn't work at least once a day – but even this was always handled politely and we took it with humor. All in all, with good management, the hotel could be a good four-star hotel and offer guests a real sense of welcome – which is something I personally missed. I would gladly return to Opatija, but I'm not sure if I would stay at the Hotel Astoria for an extended period – which is a shame.
