Review: Disappointing Facilities for a 5-Star “Signature” Hotel – Staff Are the Only Saving Grace We stayed at Cinnamon Bentota from 25–27 December, booking 3 doubles, 1 triple, and 1 single (full board). This review is intended as constructive but firm feedback, as the experience fell well below expectations for a hotel claiming to be a 5-star “signature” property of the Cinnamon group. To be very clear: our stay was only favourable because of the staff. Without them, it would have been a very poor experience. The booking process was excellent, handled professionally by Diandra, which created positive expectations before arrival—unfortunately not matched at the hotel. The staff were outstanding and did their best to compensate for issues beyond their control. Special appreciation to restaurant staff Priyantha, Chandima, Sewmini, Premodya, Ishara, Kapil, Sathsara, and Shanika, and to Sanjaya, Mina (Guest Relations), Supun (Housekeeping Supervisor), Viraj (Assistant Engineer), and Sarath. All staff were polite, patient, and supportive. They are carrying this hotel. However, considering the very high rates (higher than other Cinnamon 5-star hotels), this stay did not feel worth the price paid, nor did it feel like a “signature” property. Key issues: • No Christmas atmosphere at all—no music, events, entertainment, or Christmas food • Very slow reception response • Check-in took over 1½ hours, with billing errors and USD pricing even for local guests • Late-arriving families in our group waited 45 minutes just to collect keys despite full payment • AC issues in 3 out of 5 rooms • Centralized AC system causes damp, slippery floors when switched off; guests are forced to keep AC on even if unwell. A child in our group was injured, making this a serious safety concern • One room was not properly cleaned on arrival - hair in the washroom • Checkout extension for one room even was refused citing full occupancy, while the adjacent room remained vacant the entire day Restaurant experience: Food quality was good, but the open-air buffet restaurant has no fans and very limited air-conditioned seating. In Sri Lanka’s climate this is poor planning. On Christmas night (25°C, 89% humidity), dining was extremely uncomfortable—we were sweating while eating. A request for a pedestal fan was declined, stating none were available. At that point, we genuinely felt like leaving, but full payment had already been taken at check-in. Positives: good food taste, acceptable pools, good children’s play area, and efficient housekeeping and in-room dining staff. Final note to management: Excellent staff and a good booking team cannot indefinitely compensate for poor facilities, weak operational planning, and management decisions that overlook guest comfort, especially during peak festive seasons. This hotel has potential, but currently does not deliver the experience its branding and pricing promise.
