Citadines Uplands Kuching

Booked through Agoda. Despite paying for an upgrade on arrival, I was assigned the worst, stinking room, 521. An insult! I had to deal with the staff again and change my clothes...

Nice affordable staycation place across The Spring Mall and nearby Kuching airport. Comfortable room, nice pool and kitchen set, strategic location for sure. I stayed at Citadines Kuching in a 2-Bedroom unit with my family. Considering the relatively affordable price point and its proximity to the airport, which was one of the reasons we chose this hotel, we did enjoy parts of the stay. The beds and pillows were comfortable and suited our preferences well, and the water pressure in the bathrooms was good. The rooms and toilets were fairly spacious, which worked well for a family stay. Basic amenities such as towels, soap, toothbrushes, and shower caps were provided, and there were no musty or unpleasant smells in the room, which we appreciated. Housekeeping did a good job refreshing our room daily, which helped keep the space comfortable throughout our stay. The location is also convenient, with a small mall, The Spring, located just opposite the hotel. However, the hotel does feel quite dated and is definitely due for renovation. There were visible signs of wear and tear throughout the unit, along with stains that appeared uncleanable, especially around the toilet seats and on the fabric sofa, which felt unhygienic. The TV was very outdated, with no access to Netflix or YouTube, and several channels had heavy static and were essentially unwatchable. The air conditioners were also old and noisy but generally workable. The breakfast quality could be improved as well. The options felt rather limited, and aside from the eggs, most items were below expectations. Another downside was the water purifiers located outside the rooms. The water had a noticeable algae-like smell, which made us uncomfortable using them, so we bought bottled water from supermarkets instead. One minor point is that the room key cards are also quite dated, still requiring insertion into a slot instead of tap-style cards with door alarm functions, which are now common in many hotels. I did appreciate that card access is required to access guest floors via the lifts, which adds a level of security. Some of my relatives had a particularly unpleasant experience during the first few nights as their room faced ongoing construction, with noise continuing until around 2am, making it difficult to sleep. The hand soap in their main bathroom was also empty upon arrival. In that sense, the experience does seem to depend on which room you are assigned. On a positive note, the reception staff were very friendly and helpful, and they allowed my relatives to change rooms. They were eventually moved to a room they were satisfied with. I rated this stay 3 stars out of appreciation for the staff’s hard work, while hoping the hotel will continue to improve its facilities over time.
