It's deteriorated dramatically. It used to be a fine hotel. Now, the rooms are shabby, dated, and far too hot. The air conditioning is centrally controlled and, according to the hotel, set to a setting that Chinese people prefer. So, it's sweltering and not pleasant for the foreign guests who primarily stay at this hotel. There used to be a nice breakfast room with a delicious, extensive breakfast, but that's no longer available. It's an uninviting, shabby room with truly terrible food. Food poisoning is a real risk. It's also very far from places like the Science Market and the Bund.

I used this hotel when I made a reservation through HIS. It's very accessible via the subway from Hongqiao Airport. It's a bit of a walk from the station. There's a McDonald's, Starbucks, and Lawson near the hotel, which is convenient. The hotel feels old, but it's very clean and luxurious. The rooms are spacious and come with plenty of amenities. Toothbrushes, slippers, coffee, and free water are provided. The soundproofing isn't very good, so I was bothered by the conversations from the next room. The breakfast menu is varied and delicious. They also have a live kitchen where you can have noodles prepared for you.

We spent about 9 days at the Crowne Plaza over the holiday, and it was wonderful. Travelling as a multi-gen family, we needed a connecting set of rooms. It was really easy to book over the phone, and they set us up in the suite, which was 2 large rooms, and connected to a third room with 2 full beds. This made our stay comfortable and spacious. The hotel was really lovely and had lots of old school film artifacts, and you could watch a selection of classic Chinese films on demand for free in your room. The suites also came with free drinks, free breakfast, and free happy hour, which was basically a full buffet dinner, every day. We were also invited to a special Christmas dinner at the bar, named after Charlie Chaplin and filled with big plush seats. The food was pretty impressive--rotating dishes every day, with an egg and noodle bar, and a lot of super friendly staff. Big shout out to our friends Jacky Li and Jack Jia at the Circle Cafe. Jacky made us a special Shanghainese soft tofu soup (dou jiang) from 1949 one morning (pictured!) The gym was well-maintained, and we liked the pool too, although it was very chlorinated. You will need your own swim cap for the pool, fyi. Finally, we really appreciated the amazing housekeeping staff on our floor, Connie G and Sophia Wang. They were always there to help out. Overall, a lovely stay--we'll always remember our time very fondly!
