I had a very frustrating experience with Gran Sahara Playa del Carmen. I originally booked a 6-week stay through Trivago, and the listing clearly showed that the reservation included free cancellation. Because I found a better deal elsewhere, I cancelled well in advance and thought everything was settled. However, after I returned home from my trip, I was shocked to see that the hotel had charged me roughly $700–$800 anyway. When I contacted management to resolve the issue, they were completely unhelpful. Instead of acknowledging the cancellation policy that was advertised, they blamed me and refused to issue any refund. There was no effort to investigate, no compromise, and no real customer service — just a flat refusal to help. This feels misleading and unfair. If a hotel advertises free cancellation, they should honor it. Charging guests hundreds of dollars after the fact and then dismissing their concerns is unacceptable. I would strongly advise future travelers to avoid this hotel at all cost and save your money.
