Beautiful location and building – but as a "5-star" hotel, unfortunately a complete disappointment. The bad experience began at check-in. At 3:30 p.m., several staff members were visible at reception, but initially only one person checked us in. A guest ahead of us already had a complaint – so things moved very slowly. Only after several minutes did another staff member arrive and check us in. This resulted in unnecessary waiting – not a dramatic amount of time, but for a 5-star hotel, it made a poor first impression and was unnecessarily disorganized. After checking in, we were shown to the back, supposedly "new" section of the hotel. We were told to wait a moment and a staff member would take us to our room. However, this staff member only walked halfway, tapped on a sign with room numbers, and said something along the lines of: "Right up ahead, then left, then right – you'll find it." Service? Hardly. Once in the room: The TV didn't work. Even better: The room phone didn't work either, so we couldn't even call reception. When we went out later, we reported it downstairs—at least that was actually fixed. What was also unacceptable: We had explicitly booked two single beds, but only received a queen-size bed. No big deal for us, so we accepted it. Before going to sleep, I just wanted to get a second blanket. At reception, however, I had to wait until the employee had finished listening to her private voicemail. Then she said, "I'll send someone." After 20 minutes, no one had arrived. I went back: "Ohhh, has no one been here yet??"—she said she would "pass it on again." In the end, the second blanket arrived after a total of 50 minutes of waiting. That's unpleasant for any hotel—but simply unacceptable for a 5-star establishment. The next morning, breakfast: unfortunately, also not a highlight. • Baked tomatoes were cold • Scrambled eggs were obviously made from powder and barely edible • Sausages were cold I could list more, but the point is clear. The "crowning moment" came with the luggage: My son had a few small bottles from the minibar in his backpack—which we were explicitly told were "free of charge" at check-in. The employee handling the luggage (and incidentally, the same one who had only accompanied us halfway to our room) wanted to confiscate these bottles, claiming the case couldn't be returned and that it was about the deposit (something like 10–15 cents in the Netherlands). Honestly, what kind of standard is that? Even if that were theoretically the case—in a 5-star hotel, given the shortcomings we'd already experienced and the prices guests pay, you'd simply laugh it off instead of arguing about it. • ... Conclusion: If you're looking for a 5-star hotel in Amsterdam, you should definitely skip this one—there are much better options in the city for significantly less money. I've stayed in many 5-star hotels worldwide, and despite its location and building, this was the worst I've ever experienced.
