My daughter and I stayed at Guest House Soi last December, and it was a highlight of our trip to Japan. Our traditional tatami room was cozy and perfect for two people (despite the modest-sized room there was a full bath and a separate sink area!) Guest House Soi is centrally located—just a 5 minutes walk from a post office, a main bus line, neighborhood restaurants and convenient stores. (The nearby Sushi Aoarashi was especially notable, as was Cafe Shuudo, a cute little coffee shop ran by students from the Kyoto Municipal Higashiyama Comprehensive Support School.) There is a full kitchen at Guest House Soi for guests to store food and groceries in the fridge, or to cook a simple meal. We had many delightful meals and snacks in the warm and comfortable communal dining room. Mornings are a treat—the complimentary breakfasts comprises an abundance of seasonal fruits, bread, jams, yogurt and fresh coffee and tea. For a small fee you can order a traditional Japanese breakfasts (I highly recommend having that at least once!) What makes Guest House Soi so special is the wonderful couple who run it—Sim and Maki. They are gracious and helpful, and their warm hospitality and genuine interest in their guests made every interaction meaningful. We may as well have been guests in their home! I can’t wait to return to Guesthouse Soi on our next trip!

There was a person who snored loudly, and even though I hadn't asked for a room change, my roommate overheard them talking and said a more expensive room was available, so they immediately changed me without any additional charge. The location is also great for seeing all of Kyoto, so a place near Kyoto Station would be a good option, but it's also a great location for viewing Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Gion.
