Nestled in a lovely historic building right in the heart of Riga's Old Town, practically next door to the cathedral, Hotel Gutenbergs boasts an enviable location. The staff deserve credit for being consistently helpful and friendly. The building itself is undeniably beautiful and full of old-world character. However, the interior design appears frozen in time since the early 1990s. The uneven, sloping floors add to the rustic atmosphere—though whether you view this as delightful character or inconvenience may vary. On the positive side, the bed was genuinely comfortable. Unfortunately, several practical issues detracted from the experience: a loose, dangling showerhead, empty soap dispensers (two of them), and paper-thin walls that broadcast every sound from adjacent rooms. The security setup raises eyebrows. The antiquated key system includes a night-time self-service arrangement where all guest room keys hang in plain view and easy reach—a setup that seems to invite potential security problems. Breakfast came as an unwelcome surprise cost of approximately €12, as this wasn't made clear during the Hotels.com booking process. The offering itself is a modest buffet that won't impress anyone seeking quality or variety. It's functional rather than enjoyable—you'll leave fed, but not satisfied. The prime Old Town location is the hotel's strongest asset. If you can overlook dated décor and various practical shortcomings, it's a reasonable option. Consider having breakfast elsewhere.
