Hakodate Kokusai Hotel

Classy hotel with excellently furnished room that is spacious enough for three adults. Room is clean and well maintained. The front desk staff are friendly and helpful. Kokusai Hotel has excellent public baths that offers a great view of the Hakodate Harbour front. Short walk to Hakodate Morning Market, Hakodate Station and Mt Hakodate Ropeway. We very much enjoyed our stay here.

I had a very unpleasant experience at breakfast at the hotel. When I moved a chair for my child, a foreign staff member suddenly started yelling at me. According to the staff member's explanation, "Moving chairs is the staff's job, not something guests should do. It's dangerous." However, in a place like a breakfast area where a quiet and calm atmosphere is expected, is it appropriate for staff to yell at a guest? The hotel was in chaos that day, and many guests, not just us, were made to wait outside the restaurant for nearly an hour. My child was very hungry, but still waited quietly the whole time. I simply moved a nearby chair so that my child could sit and eat a little sooner. This is a perfectly normal action, neither illegal nor inappropriate, and I don't think it warrants being yelled at by a staff member. Hakodate is a city that attracts many tourists every year, and I understand that many of them are from Europe, America, and Taiwan. If I had been a tourist from Europe or America, would this staff member have yelled at me in the same way? Or is this kind of behavior only directed at Asian guests? If Asians received similar treatment in a Western hotel, how would they feel? This incident was extremely disappointing regarding the hotel's service, and it significantly damaged the positive impression I had of Hakodate. If Asian guests were treated this way in hotels in Europe or America, how would people react? This experience has left me extremely disappointed with the service of this hotel and has greatly damaged the positive impression I previously had of Hakodate.

The front desk staff at check-in were foreigners, but extremely polite. However, the front desk staff at check-out were Japanese, but terrible. So I'm giving it one star less. There are two breakfast venues, one of which opens at 5:30 AM. People line up before 5:30 AM. They don't keep track of time, but they ask that you limit your time to about 40 minutes.
