Our family of 5 did a ride. It was an okay experience and our least favorite experience in Iceland. We were part of a fairly large group, and it felt like our indoor training wasn’t as extensive as the training that others have mentioned in their reviews- our training was 10 minutes max (that’s a very generous estimate). Our responsible and respectful child fell off her horse literally the minute she exited the indoor arena; apparently she was holding the reins too tightly (shouldn’t someone have noted that when we did a lap around the arena?), and she fell off when her horse bent down to eat grass (which we weren’t explicitly told to dissuade our horse from doing until we were almost done with the ride). Some additional instruction would have made the ride much more pleasant; someone could have noted the mistakes we were making in the indoor arena and given us some basic guidelines. Our lead guide seemed irritated with our group and repeated what she wanted to see without telling us how to do it (e.g., repeated “stay in a line” without saying “stay in a line and you may need to pull the reins back to do so”). When my daughter made it back to the barn, she was visibly upset and discouraged, and an employee who had not accompanied our ride tried to rebuild her confidence by offering two extra laps in the indoor arena, which was appreciated. I wouldn’t bring my family back here.
