Hostel Seven Hills

Very bad experience. It gets extremely cold at night and it’s impossible to sleep. There is no heating at all and the blankets are very thin and not warm. Totally unacceptable, especially in cold weather. I do not recommend this hostel

One star because I can't give zero. Between the cockroaches in the drawers, the dirty communal showers, and the noise, it's like Koh Lantah, hostel style. The challenge? Trying to sleep. Since we were there to work and it was clearly impossible to sleep—which is the basic service, if I'm not mistaken—we asked for a refund, which they refused, of course. Avoid this place without hesitation.

Unfortunately, one star is the minimum allowed We stayed two nights in a private double room at Hostel Seven Hills in Lisbon – and it was, without exaggeration, one of the most unpleasant accommodation experiences we’ve ever had. Upon entering the room, we were overwhelmed by an extremely strong chemical odor – possibly cleaning products or air fresheners – that made it difficult to breathe. At first, it seemed like the room had just been cleaned. But within minutes, it became clear the smell wasn’t fresh; it was overpowering and made the room feel uninhabitable. The cleanliness was unacceptable. The floor was sticky and visibly dirty, with hair, nails, and other debris. The bed linens were full of hair, and the thin blanket appeared old and stained. The mattress and bedding felt worn out and unhygienic – far below the minimum standard for paid accommodation. The shared bathrooms were in similarly poor condition. Mold was visible on walls and ceilings, paint was peeling, and none of the facilities felt clean or maintained. The ventilation was ineffective, and everything had a damp, musty odor. Getting to the hostel was also unpleasant. The entrance hallway had a strong, foul smell and the glass door to the building was broken and left open at all hours. The stairwell (four floors up) was dirty and unsettling, with open apartment doors and strong cigarette smoke lingering in the air. We did not feel safe in the building or the surrounding area, which had a visibly high number of people sleeping rough and frequent offers of drugs. This is, of course, not the hostel’s fault directly – but it added to the overall discomfort of the experience. The reception area itself had an unpleasant smell, and we had no sense of welcome or professionalism from the staff. While the price of €45 per night might seem low by some standards, the quality and hygiene were far below what we believe is acceptable – at any price. We do not recommend this hostel to anyone, and we hope that the management takes these issues seriously and makes urgent improvements to hygiene, safety, and guest experience.
