Hotel Bakoua Martinique

The hotel setting is magnificent, but I was unfortunately very disappointed with the service. I live in Martinique and I chose this hotel to celebrate my birthday. I paid for a room with a sea view and called ahead to request a room on an upper floor, which was confirmed over the phone, but we were ultimately given a room on the ground floor. The staff offered no compensation whatsoever. The room was also very noisy: the terrace didn't really allow for any peace and quiet, and a persistent ventilation noise could be heard all night, even with the air conditioning turned off. In the restaurant, the staff were lovely, but the food was rather ordinary considering the price. In the end, we felt the price was excessive for what was offered.

A charming but aging hotel whose rooms are in need of renovation. The staff is very friendly, and the breakfast is perfect, but the half-board menu lacks variety. You need three days to try everything, and the only solution is a card and excessive supplements. The major drawback is a superb, supposedly private beach that suffers from a shortage of sun loungers due to their rental to cruise ship passengers passing through Fort-de-France. A real shame!

We visited Hotel Bakoua to enjoy the beach with some friends during a cruise stop. Before sitting down, we specifically asked a staff member (wearing a blue and white uniform) whether there was a charge for the beach chairs. He told us that only the covered or cabana-style chairs required payment — the regular lounge chairs were free. Based on that information, we used two lounge chairs for a couple of hours. When we were getting ready to leave, my wife was unexpectedly presented with a bill for $80 for four chairs — including two empty chairs near us that we did not use. Since I had ordered food from the restaurant, she assumed the charge was for that and paid the bill. When I realized what had happened, I immediately contacted hotel management to dispute the charge. Unfortunately, they refused to assist us. The manager stated she had to attend a meeting and walked away without resolving the issue. This experience felt dishonest and extremely disappointing. As this hotel appears to be a popular stop for cruise passengers who are only there for a short time, it’s concerning that situations like this can happen. Thankfully, our credit card company refunded the charge after we disputed it. I strongly advise future visitors to clarify charges in writing before using any beach chairs — or simply bring a towel to avoid unexpected fees. Unfortunately, based on our experience, I would not recommend this property. Please be cautious.
