Hotel Gut Matheshof, BW Signature Collection

The good points: 1. The spa and sauna area is excellent. No complaints there. 2. Service: - The service at reception was very satisfactory. Mr. Jonek was very nice, friendly, patient, and helpful. - Restaurant service is only good during the breakfast shift. The service at lunch and dinner was unsatisfactory. 3. Parking is free. The underground parking garage is directly accessible by elevator. If I come back, it will only be for the spa and sauna area, parking, and good service at reception. We will try it a second time and hope that the negative points will have been improved by then. (See below) Regarding the disappointments during the stay, despite the good sauna: 1. The room was not up to standard. We complained immediately at reception. Mr. Jonek immediately gave us a different room after we showed him a photo of the duvet (see photo). The room had a musty smell. We were moved from room 221 to room 220. Things haven't improved. The room smelled musty, just like room 221, and one of the duvets smelled like the one in the photo. We didn't complain and just accepted it. We didn't want to waste our sauna time with constant room changes. For three nights, we ran the bathroom fan nonstop to try and reduce the musty smell from the carpet. 2. Restaurant: When I arrive at a four-star hotel and see the menu and prices in a restaurant like this, it's fine; I can afford it. Because of the hotel staff's Christmas party and staff shortages, there wasn't much choice on the menu. That didn't bother us. Even if we were eating currywurst and fish and chips! But the kitchen couldn't even prepare such basic food. It was so bad I can't even describe it. We ate lunch and dinner there on Sunday, December 21, 2025, and that was enough for us. We ate in Amberg for the next two days. The hotel restaurant is not recommended. Price was no object, but the food was of the lowest quality. It was like "ready-made food." I'm sorry, but I've been a chef for 35 years and I know what I'm talking about. Everyone gets a second chance. We will come back sometime – we will try the service and food again at the restaurant – and we hope for an improvement, including in the room cleanliness. If things haven't improved, then we won't visit the hotel again, even though the sauna area is excellent, and we won't recommend it to others. It's a shame because of the good sauna area; we were very disappointed by the poor food and the poor sleep. A poor restaurant concept for a 4-star hotel.

Superb hotel, excellent food, and a top-notch spa area.

A fantastically beautiful hotel. Wonderfully quiet and lovely rooms, outstanding food, and friendly staff. But the best thing is the swimming pool with its panoramic view. If you want to really swim and not just splash around, this is the place to do it. A special thank you goes to Kerstin (massage therapist) and Erika (beautician) from the spa department. We will definitely be back.
