As Japan's first design hotel, the Fukuoka Il Palazzo, designed in 1989 by Pritzker Prize winners Aldo Rossi and Shigeru Uchida, is a monument to postmodern architecture. Rossi created a strong sense of urban detachment with his iconic windowless facade—interwoven with Iranian red cave stone pillars and vibrant green copper beams oxidized over time—metaphorically representing European palaces while echoing the traditional Japanese "Kura" style of architecture. In 2023, Uchida Design redesigned the interior. The core of the renovation lies in subverting the flow: the street-level entrance was reopened, and visitors must pass through a deep, sapphire-blue light tunnel to enter the underground main reception area, "El Dorado," converted from a former ballroom. The interior uses natural materials and soft, indirect lighting to recreate Uchida's "flowing water" sculptures, creating a stark contrast with Rossi's austere, castle-like exterior language. Through the reorganization of vertical space and the softening of the light environment, the design not only pays homage to history but also infuses this postmodern landmark with a new contemporary experience of tranquility.

All the staff were friendly. I didn't realize they didn't offer extra beds, so I made my own sofa bed by putting the sofa under the bed and the sofa next to the bed together. My elementary school-aged child slept there. The room is large, but because extra beds aren't available, I wouldn't recommend it to families with children. The afternoon and dinner menus in the lounge don't differ much, and since they're mostly desserts, there's no need to stop by. The breakfast was delicious. The building is very pretty, and the location is great, so I recommend the hotel itself. Tenjin is also within a 10-minute walk.
