I selected the hotel on the strength of its competitive pricing, complimentary parking, and respectable online rating. On paper, a sensible choice. In practice, an example in how surface appeal can obscure structural deficiency. With investment in security protocols, guest communication, more attention to detail this property, which is attractive, has good facilities and sits in the middle of a beautiful countryside, has the ingredients to be genuinely recommendable. 1. The WhatsApp security breach Approximately five weeks before arrival, a WhatsApp message arrived demanding a 'mandatory refundable deposit' amounting to one and a half times the cost of the room itself — to 'secure' a booking that I had already paid for. The message was fraudulent. The hotel confirmed as much. What the hotel did not explain nor appear inclined to investigate was how the scammers came to possess my name, booking reference, travel dates, and personal telephone number. No apology was offered. No explanation was forthcoming. No remedial action was communicated. 2. The Road to anxiety The property's distance from town — approximately fifteen minutes — is an acceptable trade-off for the price. The access road, however, is a different negotiation entirely. The final lane is, at points, only wide enough to accommodate one vehicle. When encountering oncoming traffic — which occurred three times over two days — drivers must reverse to the nearest passing point. For confident reversers, this is merely inconvenient. For the rest of us it is a recipe for anxiety. 3. The Ghost of Hospitality Past Check-in is entirely digital. We were given codes to the building and the room and essentially left to our own devices. We didn't see a single staff member until we proactively rang the reception bell on our way out just to confirm we existed. March may be a low season, but a hotel without personnel isn't just "efficient"; it’s soulless. 4. The Screaming Lock We were provided with codes but no instructions on how to use the electronic door locks. The first and third times I used these locks, they worked fine. The second and fourth times less so: when I touched the panel, it directly picked a digit, the wrong one, instead of just switching itself on, then pausing to allow me to pick the correct digit. The first time this happened my partner and I, taking turns, misfired six times - at which point the lock started (literally) screaming it little electronic head off, stating that it had locked itself down. There is a phone number placed in front of the building to call in case of problem. But the last thing one wants to do when going to a hotel is battling with a lock then call for someone to come and open the door. 5. The "Upgrade" That Wasn't I paid a little extra for a balcony. What I received was a windowless attic room where the balcony door was the only source of light. Storage was virtually non-existent: a few hooks, a foldable luggage rack, and a small chest of drawers. That’s all. The bed was low to the ground so standard airline carry-on couldn't fit underneath. There was not any desk or table either — just minimalist vibes. The view from the balcony was great though. 6. Safety and Minor Slights The interior door bolt was purely decorative, as the sliding bar and the hook were physically misaligned. As a result, it was not possible to close the door from the inside. While a kettle was provided, milk (even the powdered variety) was absent. A kettle without milk is a gesture rather than a service. The bed mattress was good, firm enough, for me, but the small pillows were quite uncomfortable.
