Hotel Terrestre

Reading the reviews before coming made me a little nervous but our 3 night stay here was fantastic. We had no issue with bugs (we brought a mosquito repeller that we had on all night), the staff was very friendly and extremely helpful (they even got me medicine I needed on a Sunday within an hour) — and the place was totally magical. I will recommend this to all my friends who can handle a little adventure (there is no AC and you’re basically outside 24/7 in the middle of nowhere). I already miss the beautiful beach, breezy terrace and delicious food. Oh and the hammam is totally awesome…Cannot wait to return!! This is not a 5 star hotel, you will not be waited on hand and foot and it does seem they’re a bit short staffed …but it is very easy to message them for what you need or find someone at the front desk. Relax :)

This hotel is truly incredible. There’s no AC, but in November it wasn’t an issue at all, the ceiling fan worked great, and they even brought us an extra floor fan that made everything super comfortable. We were in town for a nearby wedding and decided to stay here, and honestly it was the best decision. You’re completely immersed in calm, quiet, peaceful nature. The rooms are spacious and beautifully designed, with a lovely rooftop that has amazing views and a private plunge pool. We didn’t end up using ours because we were obsessed with the stunning saltwater lap pool in the middle of the property. The grounds aren’t huge, but the architecture and surrounding nature make every corner feel private, intentional, and serene. The food and service were genuinely superb, everyone was nice, friendly and very professional. And the cutest part? The cats at the restaurant. We fell in love with Mazapán and almost took him home, but instead we decided we’ll just come back to visit him as much as we can. We would 100% recommend this hotel and will definitely come back for a longer stay. It is a bit hard to get to, the last 15 minutes are a very bumpy, rocky road that isn’t the most comfortable (especially for me at 14 weeks pregnant; my belly did not love it!). But honestly, once you arrive, you won’t feel the need to leave. If you do want to explore, you can ride bikes instead of taking a car. There’s Casa Wabi nearby, a great pizzeria, and of course the option of long, romantic walks on the beach. But truly, this is the kind of place where staying on the property, disconnecting, and just enjoying the calm is completely worth it. The rooms don’t have beach views, but honestly, you don’t even need them. The beach club is very private, and the beach itself is stunning, virgin, quiet, with barely any people or buildings, and incredible rock formations and waves. It’s truly one of the best beaches I’ve ever been to. Overall, it’s a magical place. I just wouldn’t come during really hot months since there’s no AC and the rooms are semi-open, but during cooler weather it’s perfection.

Generally a pretty mediocre experience, and for the price point, a bad one. The architecture is beautiful, but the service and amenities are significantly lacking. Over our three day trip, on multiple occasions we had pool maintenance men show up unannounced by climbing over three wall from the adjacent room. Given these are meant to be private pools, and it’s an adult oriented hotel, you would think they would at least announce themselves. But beyond that they didn’t say sorry or offer to come back another time, they just proceeded to do pool maintenance—cleaning leaves out (without getting all of them lol) and then turning on the jets to circulate the water. They would then proceed to leave the jets on for hours—on our last full day we had to ask the front desk three times over the course of 2.5 hours to have the pool men turn off the jets. The food was fine but it’s a shame there weren’t more Mexican—and specifically Oaxacan—options. The only mole they served while we were there was on the breakfast menu. Beyond that, for the duration of our stay they were out of chicken, and also out of fish ceviche. How they could be out of fish ceviche on the Oaxacan coast is kind of confusing. We were not bothered by the remote location, and the very slow bumpy single lane dirt road to the hotel—but given that is the situation (it’s not going to be easy to get to main puerto Escondido town) you’d expect that the service and experience at the hotel would be better. Especially at a ~$600 USD per night price point. Thankfully we got a promotional rebate offer through one of my credit cards, which brought it down to ~$400 a night, but even at that price it felt like a bit of a let down. Two more things: When we checked in, the front desk person boasted about the property’s hammam and and other facilities like the sculptural outdoor shower by the spa, as if they were amenities for us to make use of. However the hammam was being remodeled (like, fully retitled/empty of water) and then outdoor shower did not work (no water). Even after we had been there multiple days we heard the front desk telling new guests about these amenities as if they could be used, when in fact they were just pretty pieces of architecture to look at. Additionally, the pool bar is not really a bar, just a shack. No one sits at the bar, and half the time no one is even working there. We also had two separate pool chairs break when we sat in them. For 600 dollars a night lol. We won’t be returning.
