Hyatt Regency Bethesda

The Hyatt Regency Bethesda is a monument to deferred maintenance. I had to switch rooms 4 times in 7 days. I wasn’t going to write a review because sometimes things just go wrong. I decided to this morning when I had already checked out (Tuesday morning) and no one at the hotel told me I had an important package delivered (Saturday by 6pm). If you are staying there for NIH reasons, I strong suggest that you read the positives and negatives below with regard to safety. I have never been more disappointed staying in a Hyatt. The positives: It’s a beautiful hotel in an 80s Atrium way. The rooms are generally nice. With exception (below) it’s quiet. There are some excellent people on staff. The fourth time they moved my room I insisted the staff do it (I am handicapped), and they recreated it perfectly. I was genuinely impressed. The negatives: Poor internal communication: I had packages received on check in – some flowers and a meaningful gift. They had put them in my room. I requested a room near the elevator because I have a handicapped leg. They were not able to put this together. They couldn’t find the gift (the flowers were a surprise). I had to bother someone who was sick and resting. Also poor communication on letting us know the elevator was out, and letting me know my room was moved. Room move 1: no chair, weird broken toilet issues Room move 2: screaming children, worried for their safety Room move 3: toilet leak above, no one at deask when i reported, wet toilet paper from toilet leak I don’t remember the 4th move – somewhere in the middle – and maybe it was just three. But the fact I was in a hotel for 7 nights and I can’t remember whether I moved 3 or 4 times says a lot. And I’m pretty sure it was 4. All I wanted was to rest and be unbothered and not bother anyone else. In addition, I had to walk up 11 flights of stairs when the elevators were all broken. This was not particularly communicated. No one said when it was fixed. I have a part bionic leg and this was crazy to have to do. As well, when I was next to the screaming kid room (and again worried for them foremost, disturbed sleep secondarily), a staff member told me the name of the person staying there (Mr X so just last name), the number of kids, the other people in the room, and how long they were staying. This is unacceptable. I should not know that. In summary, there is a lot to recommend the hotel but my stay was a big fail and if any of these kinds of things concern you I would stay somewhere else.

2 week business trip here at the Hyatt Bethesda. Really a pleasure. Rooms are clean and well appointed. Staff are pleasant and helpful. Love that Morton’s is right downstairs for dinner when needed!
