Idyllwild Inn

I hadn't planned to stay in town but I accidentally locked myself out of my house. I thought I'd make the best of it so I booked a room at the beautiful Idyllwild Inn. The location is great but everything was closed. Sadly, what a fiasco. The receptionist was really sweet but she made it clear she was ready to close the office. (I gave her an extra star for being şweet.) I saw a nice collection of DVDs on a bookshelf so I asked her if I could borrow one. She said I could and she'd get me a DVD player. I said "Oh, thanks anyway but no." I assumed DVD players would have already been in the room, hooked up. I found my room and walked in. It was cute, with a fireplace with a custom mantle. Gorgeous! Back to the fiasco, I read the instructions in the notebook left on the dresser. I put in 2 of my 4 pieces of firewood. I placed the firestarter pack on top, then used the matches that were provided. They were the cheapest, flimsiest matches I've ever seen, called "Penny Matches." After striking, they immediately go out. There was no kindling. The matches wouldn't stay lit long enough to catch the wood on fire. I gave up. I turned on a lamp next to the bed. As I reached underneath for the switch, the lampshade almost fell off because there's a screw missing. I turned on the heater & went to take a shower. They have the handy dispenser for gel, shampoo, & conditioner in the shower. The gel bottle was squished like someone ran out & then tried to squeeze more out. My point is that it was apparent it was empty. I tried it anyway. Yep, not a drop left. Have you ever tried to use shampoo as shower gel? It's so slippery it slides off the skin without effectively cleaning. There was no heat in the little bathroom so I gave up because I got cold. Ahhhh, time to lie down. I grabbed the remote & got into bed. I turned the TV on & tried to change the station using the channel up & down buttons as instructed. That didn't work. I was stuck with a Lakers game. I tried to turn the TV off. The on/off button didn't work either, nor did the volume. I tried reinstalling the batteries to see if I could get the remote to operate. After all, the remote had turned the TV on. Apparently, that used up the last little bit of energy in those wonderful Amazon batteries. I got up & unplugged the TV. The neighbors next door were still making a lot of noise. I was pretty sure they were the owners of the gorgeous Ferrari I parked next to. You know the type. Entitled. It was near midnight. Then, someone rattled my doorknob as though they expected the door to be unlocked. I tried to settle in. I had at least brought a book. The mattress was very firm so it was painful to my arthritic, autoimmune disease-riddled old body. Would it have been a complete fiasco if the sheets or pillows had just been soft? Maybe not, but we'll never know, because though the previous owners did the laundry in-house, assuming they're still done in-house, they're too cheap to add a little fabric softener to the wash. I didn't sleep a wink. I didn't want to take a chance that I would lose my temper if I went to the office in the morning to let them know nothing worked and asked for at least a partial refund. I was in a rush to get home to meet a friend who was kind enough to help me get in my house so I could rest. Edit on 02/06/26: You're right, it's not fair to label them. I've thought about this quite a bit. I sincerely apologize.

But what truly elevates the experience is the people. Monty gave us a warm, seamless check-in, and Lisa set the tone for the stay with the kind of genuine friendliness that defines this place. Up here, people remember you. They greet you like a neighbor the next time they see you. Conversations aren’t transactional; they’re real. That kind of hospitality is increasingly rare, and it’s unforgettable. Idyllwild itself is an incredibly artistic, welcoming, and diverse mountain community, and the Inn feels like a natural extension of that spirit — open-hearted, relaxed, and full of personality. Then there’s the cleanliness — and this is where the Idyllwild Inn quietly outshines countless big-city hotels. The first night, I laid my head on the pillow and immediately called out to my partner, “You have to smell this.” The bed linens were so fresh, the air so clean, that it reset our standard for what a truly well-kept room feels like. You don’t realize how many places cut corners until you stay somewhere that doesn’t. It’s also wonderfully dog-friendly, which fits perfectly with the laid-back, nature-loving culture of Idyllwild. Our pup was as welcome as we were — and in a mountain town like this, that matters. The Idyllwild Inn isn’t about flashy luxury. It’s about authenticity, warmth, history, and care — the kind that seeps into your stay and makes you want to return before you’ve even left. We came for a getaway. We left feeling like part of a community.

Great place to stay. Nice, clean cabins. Excellent location.
