I stayed at the InterContinental Almaty recently, and overall it was a mixed experience. The room itself was nice and clean but smaller and more basic than expected for this level of hotel. The Club Lounge was definitely the highlight — great service, friendly staff, and very convenient for breakfast and evening snacks. Communication through WhatsApp during the stay worked perfectly, and the staff were responsive and helpful. What’s strange, though, is that this feature only becomes available after check-in. It would be so much better if IHG offered some kind of pre-arrival messaging the way Hilton and Bonvoy do. A few things were disappointing. The hotel advertised two pieces of free laundry per day, but when I asked about it, that benefit was denied. As a Royal Ambassador and Diamond Elite member, I also didn’t receive any upgrade, which was surprising. The property itself feels old and could use some renovation, especially compared to other InterContinentals. The pillows were small and hard, and although I requested larger ones, nothing was ever brought. Temperature control was another issue — the thermostat was stuck around 21°C even though staff said it could go down to 18°C, which made sleeping uncomfortable. Overall, the staff were kind and professional, especially in the Lounge, but the physical condition of the hotel and some management policies fell below expectations. IHG needs to update both the property and its communication tools if it wants to keep up with competitors in Almaty.
