This review is long overdue as I was searching for the perfect words for a stay that exceeded all expectations. I hosted an art workshop in Crete for seven people in October of 2025 and chose a piece of art itself as our lodging for eight wonderful nights. The soulful quality of the rooms, the hospitality of the staff, the excellence of the food, the cooking class, olive oil tasting, and wellness amenities were beyond compare. And the location....well, it doesn't get much better for taking in a full experience of Crete. Thank you Kapsaliana Village for all you did to make my art workshop epic in every way.

A beautiful, authentic hotel in an old village with lovely stonework and surrounded by unspoiled nature. The restaurant offers exquisitely prepared, fresh ingredients. The staff is incredibly attentive. I highly recommend it.

Sweet 👍🎂 During the Great Depression in the United States in 1933, a flour mill deliberately made the markings on its flour sacks smaller and emphasized decorative patterns, so that low-income housewives could repurpose the flour sacks into skirts after they finished eating the flour. Unexpectedly, this act was hailed as a shining example of humanity. In 1933, the United States was in the depths of the Great Depression. The stock market crashed, factories closed, a quarter of the population was unemployed, and farm workers in Mississippi couldn't even afford two pounds of flour a day. Many families struggled to find food, and children's clothes were patched upon patched. Some even wore "skirts" made from rough burlap sacks, their skin chafed and red. John Sanders, the owner of the Minnesota flour mill, discovered this during a flour delivery trip to the countryside. He saw a little Black girl wearing a faded "floral dress." Upon closer inspection, he realized the dress was made from rough burlap sacks repurposed from flour sacks, with their factory's large "M" logo printed on it. The girl's mother was carefully cutting the logo off with scissors, afraid it would be seen and ridiculed. "We're selling flour, not labels that embarrass our customers," Sanders declared. Upon returning to the factory, he immediately convened a meeting and announced a redesign of the flour sacks. At the time, flour sacks were made of coarse burlap, and to prevent counterfeiting, each factory printed its logo large and prominently. Sanders, however, went against the grain: he reduced the "Minnesota Flour Mill" lettering to the corner of the bag, occupying less than 5% of the space; the main body of the bag was printed with roses, daisies, and other floral patterns, using durable plant-based dyes. This decision caused a huge uproar in the factory. The sales director slammed his fist on the table in frustration: "The logo is too small! How will customers recognize our brand?" Sanders simply said, "When they use our bags to make clothes for their children, that's the best advertisement." Sure enough, the new flour sacks generated an unexpected buzz upon their release. During the Great Depression in America, "recycling" was a survival skill for every household. Besides flour sacks, feed bags and fertilizer bags were used to make clothes and quilts. But these bags were either crudely made or had ugly designs. The "patterned flour sacks" from the Minnesota flour mill perfectly met the needs of housewives—practical yet retaining a semblance of decorum. Mrs. Mary, living in a Chicago slum, was the first to "take the plunge." She bought two new bags of flour, washed and dried them, and then, following a pattern from a magazine, altered them to make a dress for her 7-year-old daughter. The pale purple rose pattern on the bag looked especially beautiful in the sunlight. When Mary wore it to church, several neighbors asked, "Where did you buy your new dress?" When Mary revealed, "It's a flour sack," the neighbors were stunned. The news spread like wildfire, and flour sales at the Minnesota flour mill skyrocketed. Housewives would buy extra sacks of flour to collect different patterns, and even exchanged their unused sacks. A tailor shop in a small town even offered a "flour sack alteration service," charging a 5-cent labor fee to transform the sack into a well-fitting garment. Sanders didn't stop there. He then introduced "seasonal limited-edition patterns": cherry blossoms in spring, sunflowers in summer, maple leaves in autumn, and snowflakes in winter. He also printed simple cutting diagrams on the bags, noting, "This flour sack can be made into a children's dress" and "Suitable for an adult apron," a thoughtful touch that deeply moved customers. At the time, over 200 flour mills in the United States, seeing the success of the Minnesota Flour Mill, rushed to imitate it, launching patterned flour sacks. But Sanders had already seized the opportunity. He made a heartwarming move: changing the material of the flour sacks to softer linen, increasing costs by 10%, but keeping the price the same. "Children from poor families deserve more comfortable clothes," he said. In 1935, *The New York Times* reported this story, calling Sanders's action "the warmest business wisdom in the Great Depression." A reader wrote to the newspaper: "My three children's clothes are all made from Minnesota flour sacks. Every time they see the patterns on their skirts, they feel there is still hope in life." Sanders posted these letters on the factory walls as encouragement for his employees. After the Great Depression ended, the American economy gradually recovered, and new clothes became increasingly available, but the story of the "flour sack skirt" endured. In 1940, a flour mill in Minnesota held a "Flour Sack Fashion Show." Girls who had worn flour sack dresses back then walked the runway with clothes they had altered themselves. The youngest was now 15, still wearing the same pale purple rose-patterned dress from years ago. Jerry Sanders' business philosophy influenced a generation of American entrepreneurs. Many later brands borrowed his "humanistic" concept. For example, one sock brand woven detachable lace trim onto the cuffs of their socks, allowing customers to remove it and sew it onto clothing as decoration; another cannery designed its cans to be round, so they could be used as piggy banks after use. Today, the Minnesota State Museum of History still preserves the original flour sacks and the dresses they were made from. The pale purple rose pattern has faded somewhat, but the warmth it embodies has transcended nearly a century. The accompanying plaque reads: "True business success is not about how much money you make, but how much warmth you bring to others."
