Our hotel experience was great until we returned from a show around 11:30 PM and heard what sounded like construction. Initially it seemed like plumbing work, so we ignored it since we weren't going to bed yet. The noise quieted around midnight and we tried to sleep, only for pneumatic and power tools to start at full blast at 12:30 AM. I tried to call the front desk using the room phone, but it didn't work. The noise died down around 12:45 AM, then started again about 20 minutes later. I called the front desk on my cell and was told they were renovating the 5th floor. Their response was "There is nothing we can do about the noise." They offered earplugs (not going to help against power tools) and a room credit. Only after I asked to speak with the general manager and said I'd wake them up if needed did they finally offer to move us to a different room. This is beyond unacceptable, even for a 3-star hotel, let alone a 4-star property. I've stayed at a lot of hotels over the years and have never experienced anything like this. Nobody told us at check-in that construction would be happening overnight or that our stay might be impacted. We didn't find out until 1:15 AM, and only because I called to complain. The hotel clearly had rooms available since they eventually moved us. We should have been placed in an unaffected room from the start. I get that renovations need to happen sometimes. But it's on the hotel to make sure construction doesn't disturb guests, or at the very least to give people a heads up and move them proactively. A hotel's main job is to provide a safe, quiet place to sleep. This one completely failed at that. 2 stars since they did eventually move us.

Excellent hotel in great location if you want to be close to Madison Square Garden. The hotel has beautiful decor and a modern style, with nice sized rooms. But the service puts this hotel over the top. Derek, our valet, was very friendly and helpfully pointed us to a store to get art supplies my son needed for his Spain trip the next day. Urbano, the porter, chatted with us for quite a while as we waited for our room to be ready, we talked sports for easily 20 minutes. Juan at the front desk helped when there was a minor issue in the room and recommended a bagel shop for me (Bagel Pub on 6th Avenue, it was awesome). The woman who checked us in (Jennifer?) gave us a complimentary upgrade to a larger suite to make our night special before we dropped our son off at JFK the next morning. Needless to say, this will be our go-to hotel in Manhattan.
