Stayed for 1 night while exploring Hakone / Gora. Shuttle service picked us up at 14:10 from Gora station as advertised and we checked in just before the stated time (15:00). The lobby wasn’t super busy so maybe we got lucky with the wait times. The automated phone options wouldn’t let us call through to reception to book the shuttle before 14:00 which is when the shuttle service starts. Private in-room onsen was great and the room felt luxurious and modern. Staff were helpful when we needed them. Breakfast buffet had lots of variety and you can book the entry time slot you’d like via the tablet in your room. We went to the Gora brewery for dinner which is about a 15 minute walk from the hotel. The walk to the hotel from Gora town centre is steep, so you’ll need to be relatively fit or order a cab. Closest convenience store is about a 20 minute walk.

The hotel seems like it has its best days behind it, if it ever had any. The value for money is not good, as neither the rooms, spa, food or service provide anywhere near a decent experience. Over our 4 weeks across Japan this hotel was among the most expensive while being our worst stay. Local guesthouses at half the price provided better quality, service and experiences. The rooms are worn down and partly dirty. There is a constant sulfur smell around the hotel and in some areas inside (including our room). The AC was not working and due to the sulfur smell opening a window was not an option, the staff provided a fan but that’s not what I consider fresh air and it does not cool down a warm room. Also the wifi was only working intermittently, and if it was only slow. Hotel restaurant is available but very overpriced for the quality of food, there is better value and quality at the local konbini. The included breakfast buffet is okay in regard to diversity and offers japanese and western options, but for the price it is simply lacking quality and taste. The onsen/spa area is functional and clean-ish, but not a highlight or a place where you want to spend more than 15min. The hotel allows small children and pets, be prepared for children playing in rooms around you and dogs barking from the lower levels. There does not seem to be any separation of family rooms from others. The staff spoke bad English, which is not a problem generally, they were friendly on the surface but did not act on any feedback or complaints. The manager spoke no English at all and did not want to communicate with us, so communication had to go through a receptionist. The location is not central or has any significant sights around it, to get anywhere you’ll need a cab or public transport, plan 30-60min for central area.
