MAKERS HOTEL - SEOUL

Overall a very bad experience. We had originally planned on staying here for 5 nights, but after spending just a few hours here we chose to leave the hotel and make reservations elsewhere. The good: Location. If that's all you care about, the hotel is probably fine as a place to sleep. Price is decent for the area it's in. The bad: It's a weird vibe. The hotel tries to lean into the old retro look as if it's intentional, but in reality everything is just genuinely old and falling apart. Rooms are very dirty feeling. Bed sheets have black and red stains on them, as do the towels. Everything is very dusty as if it hasn't been cleaned in a while. Despite the doors being covered in soundproofing foam, we could hear everything from a neighbour next door. Our room had an extremely strong perfumed smell from incense sticks, not sure what smells that may have been covering up. Shower tiles were falling apart, doors were falling off on the cabinetry, mattress was the most uncomfortable thing we've ever laid on. The female staff member at the front desk was not very welcoming, though I will say the male staff member was kind and attempted to resolve our concerns by upgrading our room. However, at that point we had already booked another room and planned to check out. It's difficult to trust the cleanliness of an upgraded room after seeing what our room looked like. Even if a hotel like this is just meant to be a place to come home and sleep at night, it just felt uncomfortably unclean. Do yourself a favour and trust the one star reviews here. The pictures make the rooms look much more hospitable than they actually are.

Worst hotel I've ever been too! Room was hot and stuff but we were told by staff that they only have heaters. Room was dirty and nothing was changed even after requesting for cleaning.

Well, there aren’t many options of staying in Jongro / Ikseon and now when I know the area - I would rather book in Insadong not because I didn’t like the location, but because of the quality of hotels. This one is very basic yet functional for a few days stay - mattress is rather hard like wood, towels are limited and grey color, upstairs roof top is a mess as well as vending machine with food & drinks announced in the basement has disappeared (another one vending love toys remains). But you get a convenience store in front of hotel door. Yet hot water runs with strong pressure, aircon works, windows can be open for a fresh air, and the view from the 9th floor rooms is intriguing to go and explore. It has all necessities of sleeping right in the middle of action that area has to offer - hundreds of eateries, spa, probably clubs are at your door step (you can hear the beat up until 1-2am but it wasn’t bad). And very very charming Ikseon Hanok village starts when you exit the hotel door - more cafes, shops, bakeries and restaurants to explore. I would give it solid 3* for the location, and maybe 2* for the hotel itself (but I’m picky - it’s way way better than basic rooms you get in Singapore or Hong Kong).
