Our experience at the Mandarin Oriental Santiago in Jan 2026 was awful. We arrived at 2:20 pm (after traveling since 5:00 am) was told both our rooms would be available in a few minutes. We were only given rooms after significant agitation including speaking to the clueless hotel manager at 5:30 pm. We are American Express Platinum card members entitled to check in at noon IF rooms are available. But 5:30? Manager asked if "we wanted help with our bags". Between the 4 of us, we had 12 bags. Yes, it should be assumed we want our bags brought up - this isn't the Red Roof Inn. My husband had to call twice & actually go back down to reception before bags were delivered at 6:20 pm. At one point we were told the bags had been "delivered to a room & they're open". I kid you not. Their written "apology" on a card was "thank you for understanding our situation". That's not an apology. It's adding insult to injury. Service throughout, frankly, was downright hostile. Pool staff completely ignore guests. Ordered a daquari & the server - with a snotty comment - brings back a vodka lemonade. Server at breakfast - hostility. Got worse when I had the temerity to request a second cup of coffee. We had stayed at the Ritz Carlton three weeks earlier prior to our Antartica expedition & the Ritz Carleton was a delightful experience. Service was welcoming, gracious & excellent. Came to the Mandarin in part for the pool. However, pool is freezing cold & we noticed a troubling dirty brown foam in areas of the pool. Will be following up with American Express Platinum because the Mandarin Oriental Santiago should not remain a Preferred Fine Resort & Hotel.
