MAXIM HOTEL

When I first saw the hotel I was a little disappointed but you should never judge a book by its cover… unfortunately the cover didn’t lie. The area it is in is a mix of apartments and semi derelict factories and building sites. Litter all over the floor and some dubious characters around. It took us about 25 minutes to walk into Verona. Check in was ok I guess. The check in staff didn’t speak English but I don’t speak Italian so I can’t complain about that. The lift was busy and slow and there was only one working. The room was dated but seemed clean. The TV and WiFi both worked. Beds are hard but that’s ok for me. On the first night, I heard a constant beeping sound that started at around 3am. I tried to ignore it as much as I as I could but didn’t sleep much. Breakfast was garbage. Basically eggs and pastries but the eggs had run out so it does limit the choice a lot! Night 2, beeping again. Phone didn’t go through to reception and I wasn’t going down to complain in the middle of the night. To compound things even more, the room next door was full of drunk guys that found bouncing a call at 3am absolutely hilarious…. Nothing was said or done about it. Night 3 and the being had stopped… until 01:10 when the fire alarm went off and we were all evacuated. I walked into the foyer to be told nothing, absolutely nothing. The staff didn’t say a single word apart from one member of staff shouting randomly in Italian. Had there been any serious reason for the evacuation I wouldn’t have had a clue. There was zero information about where any muster point was, where the evacuation route was or any form of help whatsoever. Eventually a rather angry patron started shouting demanding information and was told it was due to someone smoking in their room so we would be safe to return to our rooms when the alarms had been turned off. Thank you angry man for the info, you were way more informative than the staff. The next morning nothing was said to us, not even an apology for the disturbance. Parking is available underground in the spaces that are not filled with discarded hotel junk and this is €10 per day. I think someone must have painted an extra 2 stars on the windows by mistake as this is definitely not a 4 star hotel. I wanted to like it but I couldn’t. The only saving grace is the gent behind the bar (Desmond I think) who was friendly and accommodating.

I stayed with my family. The luggage elevator is very convenient for carrying our bags from the parking lot to the entrance... the staff were very kind and helpful. I found the rooms very clean. The only flaw is that they are very old and in need of renovation. The breakfast was fantastic. I found the carafe and glasses for water in the common hallway a big plus, and it's very sustainable, eliminating the need for plastic bottles. I will definitely be back. Thank you.

I call and the kind lady tells me €34 per night without breakfast, finding me at the checkout €4.50 plus tourist tax... Which then varies depending on the day... what? The concierge... young man irritated by some perhaps mutual lack... empty mini bar. Bathroom cold as the room... getting to the hotel is a feat... one-way street inside. You have to park outside for free but in the street with charity vans and desperate people near garbage cans I don't know what they're doing and this worries me more. Or paid parking, yes with €10 more inside that I don't use. Another expense. Now I'll try the bed tonight and then we'll see... Hotel too big to manage... Room dirty under the bed. And constant noise from outside.... maybe fans or who knows... I'll stay there one night...
