Having read through other recent reviews we felt as though we needed to share our experience as it feels as though we visited this hotel in a complete parallel universe to others! Although to begin with we did have a couple of issues but these weren't the hotels fault. We had originally booked to stay at Melia Tortuga for 11 nights but due to building works going on for a new hotel next door we were moved to the Dunas. We hadn't been made aware of this until we tried booking in at the Tortuga. This was the holiday operators fault for not notifying us, but the hotel paid for a taxi back to Dunas even though it was only a 5 minute walk. We were also given a free upgrade to VIP, although this took a day to sort out as they had ran out of the right colour wristbands. Once the initial issues had been resolved we had a very enjoyable holiday, all the staff were welcoming and spoke good to broken English, but if they didn't understand they quickly found someone who could. They also couldn't do enough to help whether it was just answering a general enquiry or bringing fresh drinks to our table/sun lounger, our empty glasses were collected after every drink. I even arranged (at an additional cost of 30euros) a birthday cake for my wife's birthday. The cake was huge and decorated as requested with candles. The staff even sang Happy Birthday in creole/Portuguese and then again in English. Although some of the sun loungers and parasols are a bit tired and could do with a few repairs we never had issues finding somewhere to relax by the pool and NEVER had to get up early to do so. The room we had was very spacious, comfortable and received in a clean condition. It was cleaned at least every 2 days with towels and bottles of water replenished at these times. We did have to ask for additional toiletries but this was actioned before returning from the evenings entertainment. The only issue we did encounter was the banister at the bottom of the stairs. This was wobbly when we arrived but was completely removed and not replaced at some point during our stay. The entertainment was good with local singers, and hotel dancers all of which were enthusiastic and talented. The drink selection was good, but a little limited. We had access through our VIP wristbands for premium cocktails but these weren't advertised, still the drinks were nice and ordering at the bar never took long. As we were upgraded to VIP this gave up the opportunity to eat/book tables at the a la carte restaurants across the nearby hotels. One of the kind staff members booked a table at each of the restaurants for us across our stay. The ones that we ate in were really nice and delicious the only complaint that we have is the selections available, my wife is vegetarian and her options were incredibly limited or non existent. However, on one occasion they did make her something completely off menu and this was without any complaining. The buffet selections were much better for her and we never had any issues with breakfast, lunch or dinner. The lunch selection at Aqua was just an added bonus. Overall we had a very enjoyable holiday and are looking to return next year just the one suggestion would be to have at least one vegetarian option available at the a la carte restaurants. A 5-star hotel on paper, but in reality, we'd rate it 2 stars. Broken chairs, defective sun loungers. Bad food! Non-existent service. No slide for children, room not cleaned, we had to call reception to request cleaning. Avoid this hotel; for the price, book your stay at another hotel. The only positive point is the sun.

My experience at the Meliá Dunas Beach Resort & Spa was extremely disappointing and, unfortunately, resulted in serious health issues for my family. My mother suffered from food poisoning after eating at the hotel’s buffet, which not only lacked variety but served almost the same food every single day. The quality and handling of the food were highly questionable. The restaurant environment made things even worse: there were constantly mosquitoes everywhere, making meals uncomfortable and raising major concerns about hygiene. Another very negative point was the room cleaning service, which rarely showed up. There were days when no one came at all, leaving towels unchanged and bins unemptied. For a hotel of this category, such negligence is completely unacceptable. Considering the high price and the reputation of the Meliá chain, I expected far more professionalism, safety, and basic hygiene standards. Sadly, I do not recommend this hotel and will not be returning.
