Muthu Raga Madeira Hotel

My family and I stayed at this hotel in Madeira and, unfortunately, the experience was very disappointing. I'm writing this review as someone who has stayed in many hotels of various categories. A four-star hotel should have a level of quality, comfort, and professionalism above average, which is clearly not the case here. Starting with the cleanliness and the rooms: we were divided into two rooms and in both we noticed a lack of hygiene and care. One of the rooms smelled of cigarettes, which is unacceptable. Although they changed the room, it seemed like the change was a problem, as if the situation were normal. The rooms are old, outdated, with old furniture. The armchairs and upholstery were stained, dirty, and looked very worn. The hotel, in general, seems stuck in time, without any modernization. The bathroom is another negative point: old, unhygienic, and still with a shower curtain, which is totally outdated and unhygienic nowadays. The elevator is slow and small for the size of the hotel. Parking is very limited; I understand there's not much to do, but it's another negative point. Now, the food: simply very poor. Breakfast is acceptable, but dinner is terrible: few options, tasteless food, and little variety of desserts. The so-called "Portuguese dinner" was advertised as "cod with cream," but it wasn't cod with cream at all. It looked more like tuna or salmon with cheese—something unrecognizable. Anyone who is Portuguese or who has eaten cod knows perfectly well that it wasn't cod. I don't know who the hotel is trying to fool. The cutlery is also poor; the knife barely cuts the food. The bar closing at 10 pm makes no sense, especially in a hotel that doesn't have an indoor pool or gym. The internet is very slow. And to make matters worse, I saw a cockroach in the hallway. This is simply unacceptable. We loved Madeira Island – a wonderful place, friendly people, fantastic weather. We will definitely return to the island. But we will not return to this hotel. This is not a four-star hotel. At most, it deserves three stars. A hotel isn't four-star because it has boiled eggs for breakfast. It's four-star because of quality, comfort, cleanliness, and service, and that doesn't exist here. I can already foresee the standard response: "We regret your experience." But those who truly regret, correct. And those who correct, don't repeat the same mistakes with guest after guest. Regretting without changing is just a polite way of pretending to care. If this hotel truly cared about its customers, it wouldn't need to regret it, because it would have invested in maintenance, cleanliness, comfort, and quality, or at least compensated for those shortcomings in other aspects. Here, unfortunately, "we regret" seems to be just part of the script. It's a shame I don't have photos to prove everything I'm saying, but my account and my feelings already show well the indignation I felt during my stay. There are many hotels in the world and, whether in Madeira or another country, I will not return to any hotel in this chain. This public record remains, written with complete honesty, so that everyone can make their choices with the same information that I would have liked to have had before booking.
