This hotel was perfect for our 4-day city break. The location is super central, the room was quite small but adequate for sleeping, and most importantly, it was very clean with comfortable beds. Even with the window open, I slept well, and the outside noise was minimal. The rooftop terrace is also very inviting when the weather is warmer. The breakfast buffet was delicious, and they even had tasty gluten-free rolls. Unfortunately, it was still too cold to eat outside. We'll be back soon.

My friend and I had to cancel our trip after our flight from Singapore to Madrid via Dubai was cancelled due to conflict-related airspace closures. The cancellation occurred only two days before our scheduled departure, forcing us to urgently rearrange our plans and contact the hotels in our itinerary to request cancellations. Other hotels on the same itinerary, also booked under non-refundable rates, were willing to accommodate cancellations given these extraordinary circumstances. We explained that reaching the property was impossible, not just because of the temporary airspace closures, but also due to ticket availability and the cost of alternative flights. To expect guests to travel during a major conflict is both unreasonable and unsafe. Unfortunately, this hotel has demonstrated a lack of basic empathy and customer service, qualities that are essential in the hospitality industry. We urge you to reconsider your position and handle this matter with the understanding and professionalism that guests reasonably expect.

There is real world logic, and then there is Hotel Occidental Barcelona 1929 logic. I can see why they are merely a 3-star hotel, and why they will likely remain that way. Customer service or satisfaction is not at the forefront of this hotel, so unless you want your trip to Barcelona to be as miserable as the people running this place - I suggest you book at another hotel. After reading several other 1-star reviews here, I now understand the pattern. The customer service at this hotel is simply subpar. They lack not only logic and common sense, but also basic empathy and understanding. I clearly explained that my entire trip had been cancelled due to conflict-related airspace closures affecting flights in the Middle East. My international flight from Singapore via Dubai to Madrid was cancelled, making it impossible for me to reach Spain. This hotel’s brilliant reply? I quote: “Your flight tickets indicate Madrid as the destination rather than Barcelona. Furthermore, the air service from your airport of origin continues to operate. For these reasons, the circumstances described do not directly prevent travel to our destination.” If my flight cannot even take me to Madrid, how exactly am I supposed to get to Barcelona? Do they expect me to magically appear there? Apparently, they do not understand that when there is an ongoing conflict, flights may not be easily available or accessible. With my flight cancelled at short notice, how exactly is a traveler supposed to suddenly find another international route across continents? What makes this even more disappointing is that other hotels on the same trip, also booked under non-refundable rates, recognized the extraordinary circumstances and refunded the bookings without issue. This hotel chose not to. I have to commend that they are willing to risk their reputation the same same way they suggested I risk my life going across from Asia to Europe all to make it for this booking. Future travellers should take this as a warning: if anything goes wrong with your travel plans, do not expect flexibility or understanding from Occidental Barcelona 1929.
