It's difficult to judge, as this was my first time staying in a hotel in Scotland. I'd been told that the standard in Scottish hotels is generally modest. So, I'll compare it to German standards and leave it to the reader to form their own opinion. First and foremost, the staff was exceptionally friendly and conscientious. As friendly as all the locals I spoke to on my travels through England, the Lowlands, and the Highlands. The room: A white bathroom with a plastic bathtub, plenty of soft towels, and international electrical outlets, but a broken faucet at the sink (cold water) and a loose toilet seat, probably because the toilet was installed only about 15 cm from the wall. This meant that right-handed people had the problem of having to turn to their left on the seat to clean themselves. The bedroom had a double bed with adequate mattresses and several small pillows. Modern satellite TV. The kettle with coffee and tea was replenished daily. The entire room was cleaned every morning. The hotel was very well heated and quiet overall. We had booked half-board as a group. A choice of three options each for starter, main course, and dessert. The same vegetable and starch side dish (beans, carrots, boiled potatoes) accompanied the main courses every day. However, the quality and taste were good. We had brisket, fish with gratin, beef in puff pastry, spaghetti with cream, vegetarian options, cherry pie with vanilla sauce, apple pie, ice cream, fruit platter, etc. Breakfast was typical of the region and heavily meat-based (including the classics of beans, bacon, hash browns, and toast only). In my opinion (and I am critical and demanding), it was perfectly acceptable for a 3-star hotel. Unfortunately, as is so often the case in England/Scotland, you have to collect your own drinks from the bar and pay for them individually. Drink prices were around £6 (Guinness on tap, cider, or wines). The (red) wines were exceptionally good value for the price and surprisingly good. In the details of the rooms, the facade, the hallways, and the furnishings, much appeared homemade and poorly executed (painted-over hinges, dirty cracks from previous years, an unclean smoking area right in front of the entrance, overlooked corners – it seems no one has had an eye for detail for a long time). All in all – and considering the price – it's acceptable. The location between Edinburgh and Glasgow, on the way to the Highlands, is perfect. It should also be mentioned that there's a 24/7 petrol station with an ATM just 200 meters to the left of the hotel. Despite this, I would still recommend it overall. The advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
